The short answer

Rune Shaper (D&D 5e 2014, Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants) requires a Spellcasting Feature or the Rune Carver Background. It grants a free comprehend languages cast plus swappable runes that let you inscribe an existing 1st-level Player's Handbook or Xanathar's spell onto gear and cast it free once per long rest. It gives no Ability Score Increase and adds zero new spells.

Introduction

Rune Shaper is the second feat-chain entry point from Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants, and unlike Strike of the Giants, it isn't a combat damage rider - it's a small, swappable spellcasting subsystem built around inscribing runes onto gear. The Rune Carver background grants it directly as a background feature, and the book's own bonus-feat system means every character in a giant-themed campaign gets a free feat at 1st level regardless of background.

This guide covers the full rune-swap mechanic, confirms it introduces zero new spells, and covers which spellcasters get the most value from it.

Rune Shaper 5e

What the Feat Does

Prerequisite: Spellcasting Feature or Rune Carver Background.

Comprehend Languages. You learn comprehend languages and can cast it once free (no spell slot) between long rests; you can also cast it normally using a spell slot you have.

Rune Magic. You know a number of runes equal to half your proficiency bonus, rounded down, chosen from the Rune Spells table. On a long rest, you can inscribe each known rune onto a nonmagical weapon, armor, piece of clothing, or other object you touch. While carrying or wearing a rune-marked object, you temporarily learn that rune's matching 1st-level spell until your next long rest, and you can cast it using any spell slot you have. You can also invoke an inscribed rune once between long rests to cast its spell for free, with no slot and no material components. Your spellcasting ability is Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, chosen when you take the feat. You can swap a known rune for a different one from the table each time you level up.

Rune Spells table - zero new spells, all confirmed existing PHB/XGE spells:

RuneSpell
CloudFog Cloud
DeathInflict Wounds
DragonChromatic Orb
EnemyDisguise Self
FireBurning Hands
FriendSpeak with Animals
FrostArmor of Agathys
HillGoodberry
JourneyLongstrider
KingCommand
MountainEntangle
StoneSanctuary
StormThunderwave

Rune Shaper grants no Ability Score Increase at all - its entire value is the rune subsystem above.

Who Gets the Most Value From This

Half your proficiency bonus, rounded down, means you know exactly 1 rune at levels 1-8, 2 runes at levels 9-16, and 3 runes at level 17+. That's a thin spell list compared to a real spellcasting class feature, which puts Rune Shaper's realistic ceiling below a real multiclass dip for a character who wants more spells overall.

Where it earns its slot is on a class with little or no spellcasting of its own. A Fighter or Rogue with a single level of access to a Spellcasting Feature (Eldritch Knight, Arcane Trickster) gets a small, permanently-available toolkit that doesn't compete with their limited existing spell list. The free-cast-once-between-long-rests option on the inscribed rune also means the feat pays for itself with zero slot cost on the days it matters most, since you can always fall back on the free invocation before spending a real slot.

Comprehend Languages alone is a solid exploration and social tool for any class that lacks it: it works out-of-combat problems (deciphering inscriptions, understanding an NPC's native tongue) without spending a spell slot at all once per rest.

Rune Selection Strategy

With only 1 rune known for most of a campaign's length, pick based on your table's most common gap rather than the flashiest option:

  • Frost (Armor of Agathys) covers a defensive gap for a melee-adjacent character with no other temp-HP source.
  • Stone (Sanctuary) is a strong out-of-combat safety net for a squishy support character who otherwise has no defensive spell.
  • Hill (Goodberry) solves food/water logistics for free on any long exploration arc.
  • Dragon (Chromatic Orb) is the best offensive pick if the campaign leans combat-heavy and you want damage from your single known rune.

Because you can swap your known rune(s) on every level-up, treat the choice as adjustable rather than permanent - reassess after a session that exposed a real gap in your kit.

Common Mistakes

Assuming Rune Shaper grants an Ability Score Increase. It doesn't - unlike the six Strike of the Giants boon feats, Rune Shaper's entire value is the rune subsystem, with zero stat bump attached.

Treating the inscribed spell as permanently known. It fades at your next long rest along with the rune's temporary status - you have to re-inscribe on each long rest to keep the spell active.

Forgetting the free-background interaction. A Rune Carver character already has this feat from their background feature - check before planning to spend an Ability Score Improvement on it.

Verdict

Free for most Rune Carver characters via the book's bonus-feat system, which makes the rune-swap toolkit a real, no-cost utility layer. Taken as an actual feat slot, it's best on a class with little or no spellcasting of its own - an Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster gets the most proportional value, while a full caster with an already-deep spell list gets comparatively little from 1-3 extra swappable 1st-level spells.

FAQ

Do I have to spend a feat slot on this? Usually not - the Rune Carver background grants it free through the book's bonus-feat system.

Does it give an Ability Score Increase? No - Rune Shaper is the only entry-point feat in this chain with zero ASI attached under any circumstance.

Does it grant any new spells? No - every spell on the Rune Spells table already exists in the Player's Handbook or Xanathar's Guide.

Can a non-spellcaster take it? Only via the Rune Carver background. As a standalone feat pick, the Spellcasting Feature prerequisite excludes a class with no spellcasting of any kind.
