The short answer

In D&D 2024, Kalashtar are Medium Aberrations with 30-foot Speed. Dual Mind grants Advantage on Wisdom and Charisma saving throws, Mental Discipline grants Psychic resistance, Mind Link provides telepathy out to 10 times your level in feet, and Severed from Dreams blocks the Dream spell and grants one temporary skill proficiency after each Long Rest.

What Kalashtar brings to a party

Kalashtar is an Eberron species for players who want dependable mental defenses and a quiet way to coordinate with the party. Dual Mind protects two saving throws, Mental Discipline cuts Psychic damage, and Mind Link grows from 10 feet at level 1 to 100 feet at level 10.

The package has no extra attack, transformation, or damage burst. Its value shows up when a failed save would remove you from a scene, when the group needs to communicate without announcing its plan, or when one flexible skill helps the party handle the day ahead.

Kalashtar species traits

Kalashtar are Aberrations, Medium, and have 30-foot Speed. In Eberron lore, they come from the union of humans and renegade quori spirits. They cannot communicate directly with those spirits, but may experience the connection as instinct, inspiration, or memories while sleeping.

Dual Mind: ●

You have Advantage on Wisdom and Charisma saving throws. That is useful against effects that target a character's judgment, will, or presence, but it is not an immunity. Look at the saving throw in the effect, then apply the benefit when it is Wisdom or Charisma.

This trait is particularly useful on a character whose turn matters to the group. A caster maintaining a pivotal spell, a party face negotiating under pressure, or anyone protecting a fragile ally has a reason to value the extra reliability.

Mental Discipline: ●

You have Resistance to Psychic damage. The damage type is campaign dependent, so do not choose Kalashtar solely for it. It earns more value in adventures involving psionic enemies, dream intrusions, or other mind-focused threats, and remains a welcome defense when those encounters appear.

Mind Link: ●

You have telepathy with a range in feet equal to 10 times your level. At level 5 that is 50 feet; at level 10 it is 100 feet. When you use the trait to speak telepathically to a creature, you can take a Magic action to let that creature speak telepathically with you for one hour. Taking another Magic action ends that reply link.

Mind Link is not an always-on party radio. It gives you a way to communicate, then lets one creature answer after you spend the action. Use it when silent coordination is worth the setup: passing a warning through a guarded hall, checking in with a scout, or keeping a conversation private in a crowded room.

Severed from Dreams: ●

You cannot be the target of the Dream spell. More often, the useful part is the skill flexibility: after each Long Rest, choose one skill and gain proficiency until the next Long Rest.

Choose that skill from the plan, not from a fixed list. Take Stealth before infiltration, Investigation before examining a ruin, or Persuasion when the party expects a delicate conversation. Check the sheet first so you do not duplicate a proficiency you already have.

Hot Take: Mind Link works best when the party makes a specific communication plan. A prepared reply link can keep a scout and the group coordinated; vague telepathy has less practical value.

Class fit for Kalashtar

The species does not assign ability scores or force a class. These choices work because they value the same save categories or make a practical use of the communication and skill tools.

Cleric: ●

Clerics often need to stay active when the party is under pressure. Advantage on Wisdom saves gives a Kalashtar Cleric a useful defense against effects that could interrupt that role, while Mind Link supports private coordination with an ally who needs healing, positioning, or a warning. The daily skill can cover an exploration or social gap without changing the character's core identity.

Druid: ●

Druids can use Mind Link for scouting and group movement without making a conversation audible to every nearby creature. Dual Mind also supports a Wisdom-based character who expects magical control effects or strange environments to be part of the campaign. Pick Kalashtar for that practical team role, not because the species adds a new Wild Shape option.

Warlock: ●

Warlocks make good use of the Charisma-save side of Dual Mind and often appreciate one rotating skill for a social or investigative day. Mind Link gives a Warlock a way to keep an ally in a private exchange when the scene calls for it. Psychic resistance is a bonus, but the character should still be built around the patron and play style you want.

Start Building

Backgrounds that support a Kalashtar concept

Backgrounds set ability-score options, skills, tools, equipment, and an Origin feat. Choose one that supports the class and story, then use Severed from Dreams for a different short-term job.

Hermit: ●

Hermit offers Constitution, Wisdom, and Charisma ability-score options; Investigation and Medicine; an herbalism kit; and the Healer feat. It suits a Kalashtar who has spent time interpreting dreams, instincts, or a quiet inner presence. The package is especially easy to use for a Cleric, Druid, or support-minded character.

Acolyte: ●

Acolyte offers Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma options; Insight and Religion; calligrapher's supplies; and Magic Initiate (Cleric). It is a sensible start for a Kalashtar whose connection to the dream world is expressed through devotion, study, or service. Its permanent skills leave the daily Kalashtar proficiency free for a campaign-specific need.

Sage: ●

Sage offers Constitution, Intelligence, and Wisdom options; Arcana and Investigation; calligrapher's supplies; and Magic Initiate (Wizard). Choose it for a character researching quori, Eberron's planes, or a mystery that needs patient scholarship. It is a better fit for an investigation-focused concept than a generic assumption that every Kalashtar must be a mystic.

Build example: a Kalashtar Cleric with a flexible party job

Concept: A steady support character who can keep working when a mental effect targets the party and can shift one skill to match the next day's problem.

Species: Kalashtar

Background: Hermit

Class: Cleric

At character creation: Use the Background's ability-score options to support the Cleric's needs, then note the permanent Investigation and Medicine proficiencies. After each Long Rest, choose a different Severed from Dreams skill that complements those choices instead of repeating them.

During exploration: Establish a Mind Link reply connection with the ally who is scouting or watching the rear when quiet communication will change the group's choices. The telepathy range grows with level, so revisit the plan as the party's distance and tactics change.

When a mental threat appears: Apply Dual Mind only when the effect calls for a Wisdom or Charisma saving throw. Apply Mental Discipline only when the effect deals Psychic damage. Keeping those triggers separate prevents the common mistake of treating either trait as blanket immunity.

At the next Long Rest: Change the temporary proficiency as the situation changes. A trapped ruin, tense audience, and wilderness route call for different skills, which is the point of the trait.

This build leaves the class, subclass, and spell choices open. Kalashtar supplies a defensive and communication layer; the Cleric choices should still reflect the campaign and the player at the table.

Choose Kalashtar for mental defense and coordination

Kalashtar is an Eberron option built around repeatable advantages: better Wisdom and Charisma saving throws, Psychic resistance, scaling telepathy, and one daily skill proficiency. It suits a party that uses those tools deliberately. Confirm that Eberron character options are available, then build the class and Background around the job you want the character to do.
