Introduction

Gearforged (Labyrinth Worldbook) are living minds in mechanical bodies. Mechanically, they are a durable lineage with construct-adjacent defenses, unusual survival rules, and an Upgrade choice that pushes them toward weapons, size-based melee pressure, or emergency repair.

This is one of the strongest Labyrinth Worldbook lineages for players who want their ancestry to matter in both combat and exploration. Not needing food, drink, breath, or normal sleep changes how the character handles hazards, travel, and attrition.

Lineage Traits

Rating Key

  • ● Red - Bad.
  • ● Orange - Situational.
  • ● Green - Good.
  • ● Blue - Fantastic.

Options from Labyrinth Worldbook are marked with (Labyrinth Worldbook).

Chassis Size ●

You choose another lineage option to inform your chassis size and shape. This is flexible, but it is not a way to stack two full lineage packages.

Hybrid Humanoid ●

Disease immunity, poison resistance, and advantage against paralysis, petrification, and poison is a strong defensive suite.

Constructed Vitality ●

Not needing to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep is a major exploration advantage. The dormant-state Perception drawback matters, but the overall package is excellent.

Machine Speech ●

Highly setting-dependent. In a campaign with gearforged, mechadrons, or machines, it is flavorful and useful. Elsewhere, it is mostly identity.

Upgrade: Always Armed ●

Great for characters worried about disarmament, infiltration, or always having a weapon ready. Less valuable for casters and natural-weapon builds.

Upgrade: Bulk Up ●

Strong for Strength frontliners. Becoming Large, adding weapon damage, and gaining advantage on Strength checks and saves can swing one important fight per long rest.

Upgrade: Quick Fix ●

The broadest option. Bonus-action temporary hit points when below half HP is useful on nearly every class and recharges on a short or long rest.

Best Classes for Gearforged

Fighter ●

Fighter uses every Upgrade well. Bulk Up and Quick Fix are especially clean on frontline builds.

Paladin ●

Paladin appreciates the defensive floor, disease immunity, and emergency durability from Quick Fix.

Artificer-Style Inventor Concepts ●

If your table supports a machine-focused caster or crafter concept, Gearforged is the obvious chassis.

Cleric ●

Durable support Clerics like Constructed Vitality and Quick Fix. The lineage also supports immortal-servant or sacred-machine themes.

Rogue ●

Always Armed supports concealed weapons, and constructed defenses help a scout survive nasty traps.

Heritage Pairings

Steam-and-Brass (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● The default Gearforged pairing and one of the book's recommendations. It reinforces the mechanical-body identity directly.

Stygian (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● Good for gearforged tied to the River Styx, memory loss, death, or underworld journeys.

Fireforge ● Works for forge-built characters and machine artisans.

Salvager ● Strong for repaired, rebuilt, or scavenged-body concepts.

Player's Guide 2 Heritage Options

Ironwrought (Player's Guide 2) is the signature new fit for built bodies, workshops, industrial communities, and hard labor.

Covenant (Player's Guide 2) supports gearforged bound by creator oaths, service vows, or sacred directives.

Cosmopolitan remains strong for gearforged created or rebuilt in a large city.

Hot Takes

Hot Take: Gearforged (Labyrinth Worldbook) is the most generally useful Labyrinth lineage. The defenses, survival traits, and Quick Fix do not need a specific campaign premise to matter.

Hot Take: Quick Fix is the boring Upgrade and probably the best one. Always Armed and Bulk Up create better visuals, but short-rest emergency durability is useful at every table.

Final Notes

Gearforged (Labyrinth Worldbook) is a durable, flexible lineage for players who want a constructed body without losing character identity. Pick the Upgrade around your class role, then let the survival traits do quiet work all campaign.

For the full comparison across every lineage, use the Tales of the Valiant Lineage Guide. Pair Gearforged with the Heritage Guide to finish your character's origin.
