Introduction

Derro (Labyrinth Worldbook) are underworld survivors shaped by darkness, isolation, and contact with things beyond the stars. Mechanically, they are a defensive Small lineage with exceptional vision and one of the best anti-horror packages in the expanded roster.

Derro are strongest in campaigns where psychic damage, fear, charm, dread, void taint, and deep exploration matter. In a bright wilderness campaign, they lose some shine. In a Labyrinth campaign full of dead worlds, Void cults, and buried passages, they feel purpose-built.

Lineage Traits

Rating Key

  • ● Red - Bad.
  • ● Orange - Situational.
  • ● Green - Good.
  • ● Blue - Fantastic.

Options from Labyrinth Worldbook are marked with (Labyrinth Worldbook).

Small Size ●

Small size helps with stealth, positioning, and tight environments. It also locks you out of Heavy weapon builds, so avoid Derro if your plan is a greatsword or maul frontliner.

Superior Darkvision ●

Darkvision to 120 feet is excellent in underground and night-heavy adventures. The drawback is sunlight sensitivity for sight-based Perception checks, which matters in open daytime travel.

Dread Within ●

Advantage on saves against being charmed or frightened is broadly useful. It is especially good for scouts, casters, and anyone who cannot afford to lose actions to control effects.

Psychic Barrier ●

Psychic resistance plus advantage against dread and void taint effects is the reason to pick Derro. This is campaign-dependent, but in the right campaign it is a premium defensive identity.

Best Classes for Derro

Rogue ●

Small size, huge darkvision, and mental defenses make Derro excellent scouts and infiltrators.

Warlock ●

Warlock fits the eldritch theme and appreciates the defensive package. Derro can stand closer to psychic and horror threats than most casters.

Wizard ●

Superior Darkvision is useful for dungeon play, and Psychic Barrier helps keep the Wizard online against mind-affecting enemies.

Ranger ●

Derro Ranger works best in underground, ruins, and survival campaigns where long-range darkvision creates real tactical value.

Fighter ●

Dexterity Fighter works fine. Strength Heavy weapon Fighter does not.

Heritage Pairings

Fallen (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● The cleanest grim-survivor pairing and one of the book's recommended Derro heritages.

Void-Touched (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● The most on-theme option. Pick this when the character should be unmistakably shaped by Void contact.

Salvager ● Good for underworld scavengers, ruined-world survivors, and practical explorers.

Cloud ● Adds arcane utility to a lineage already tied to strange knowledge and eldritch pressure.

Player's Guide 2 Heritage Options

Conflicted (Player's Guide 2) reinforces derro paranoia, rival enclaves, and survival amid hostile factions.

Covenant (Player's Guide 2) works for cult obligations, strange vows, and underworld pacts.

Hivebound (Player's Guide 2) supports tight underground communities and group survival.

Hot Takes

Hot Take: Derro (Labyrinth Worldbook) is not a generalist lineage. It is a campaign call. In a normal city-and-wilderness game, it is merely fine. In a Void, horror, or underground campaign, it is one of the best defensive picks on the board.

Hot Take: Superior Darkvision is easy to underrate because many characters have darkvision. Doubling the range changes dungeon scouting, ambush detection, and ranged engagement distances.

Final Notes

Derro (Labyrinth Worldbook) is a specialist defensive lineage for dark, strange campaigns. Build one when the table is actually using the Labyrinth's horror and Void material, and handle the lore with care.

For the full comparison across every lineage, use the Tales of the Valiant Lineage Guide. Pair Derro with the Heritage Guide to finish your character's origin.
