Introduction
Dhampir comes from Ravenloft: The Horror Within, not the core 2024 Player's Handbook, so check with your DM before building one. Mechanically, it is a Humanoid built around one core loop: Vampiric Bite, an Unarmed Strike variant that can heal you or improve your next ability check or attack roll when it connects.
That loop rewards a specific playstyle. If your character already makes damaging Unarmed Strikes, Vampiric Bite can turn one of them into limited sustain or a bonus to a later roll without taking a separate action. A grapple or shove does not deal damage, so it cannot trigger the bite by itself. If your build never chooses an Unarmed Strike, Spider Climb, Darkvision, and Necrotic resistance carry most of the package.

Species Traits Breakdown
Darkvision ●
60 feet of Darkvision, a common baseline among 2024 species. It is useful in dungeon or night encounters, but it is rarely the deciding factor in a build.
Spider Climb ●
A Climb Speed equal to your Speed from level 1. At character level 3, that upgrades: you can move across vertical surfaces and ceilings while keeping your hands free. This is a real mobility trait, not flavor. It opens up ambush angles, lets you bypass terrain that stalls the rest of the party, and gives a martial build an option other than "walk forward."
Trace of Undeath ●
Resistance to Necrotic damage. A single-damage-type resistance is situational, but it matters whenever a creature, hazard, or spell deals Necrotic damage.
Vampiric Bite ●
When you use an Unarmed Strike and deal damage, you can make it a bite instead, dealing 1d4 + your Constitution modifier in Piercing damage. Against a creature that is not a Construct or Undead, choose Drain (regain Hit Points equal to the Piercing damage dealt) or Strengthen (gain a bonus equal to that damage to your next ability check or attack roll within 1 minute). You can use the trait a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, regaining all uses on a Long Rest.
Vampiric Bite in Practice
The trait is an Unarmed Strike variant, which means it does not take a separate action. When you choose an Unarmed Strike that deals damage, you can choose the bite instead. It does not add an attack or turn a grapple or shove into bite damage; it replaces the damage of that Unarmed Strike. If your class already wants to throw a fist or headbutt, biting can be a useful option on that swing.
The Drain-versus-Strengthen choice determines how the trait helps. Choose Drain when you need Hit Points without spending a spell slot or a healer's turn. Choose Strengthen when the next attack roll or ability check matters. The bonus lasts for one minute, but it applies only to the next ability check or attack roll, not a saving throw.
The hard cap is Proficiency Bonus uses per Long Rest, which starts at 2 and only reaches 6 at character level 17. Early on, that means you are rationing bites, not spamming them. Spend a use when healing or the next-roll bonus will change the scene, rather than treating the bite as an at-will damage upgrade.
Hot Take: Vampiric Bite is a limited resource tied to one damaging Unarmed Strike. A weapon user must choose an Unarmed Strike to use it, so the trait is most useful on a build that already fights unarmed.
Best Classes for Dhampir
Monk - Best
Monk already makes damaging Unarmed Strikes, so it can use Vampiric Bite without changing its normal combat language. The bite is still not a blanket damage increase: use it when Drain or Strengthen is worth replacing that strike's normal damage.
Barbarian - Strong
Barbarian wants to be in melee every turn. A Strength-focused barbarian that deliberately includes damaging Unarmed Strikes can use the bite during Rage; Rage Damage applies when a Strength-based Unarmed Strike deals damage. Reckless Attack can help the bite connect when it applies to that Strength-based attack.
Fighter - Strong
Extra Attack lets a Fighter choose a damaging bite for one attack and still make another attack in the same Attack action. An unarmed-focused Fighter gets more natural value; a pure weapon-and-shield Fighter gets less, since biting replaces a weapon attack for that swing.

Start BuildingPaladin - Strong
A Paladin already wants to be in melee and has Lay on Hands, so Drain is a secondary option rather than the whole plan. Strengthen can support a later attack roll that might be followed by Divine Smite if it hits. The species works best when the Paladin is willing to trade an ordinary weapon attack for a situational bite.
Best Backgrounds for Dhampir
Soldier - Best
Soldier grants Athletics and Intimidation, plus the Savage Attacker Origin feat. Its Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution ability-score options support a melee Dhampir, especially one that plans to use Strength-based Unarmed Strikes.
Criminal - Good
Criminal's Stealth focus fits a Dhampir leaning into the Spider Climb trait for infiltration and ambush positioning, rather than a straight frontline brawler. Good pairing if you want the "predator in the shadows" version of the concept instead of the "unstoppable grappler" version.
Build Example: Dhampir Barbarian (Path of the Berserker), Levels 1-10
Concept: A Strength-based brawler who uses a limited bite for emergency healing or to set up a later attack.
Species: Dhampir (Medium)
Background: Soldier (Origin Feat: Savage Attacker)
Class: Barbarian (Path of the Berserker at level 3)
Ability Scores: STR 16, CON 15, DEX 14, WIS 12, CHA 10, INT 8 (standard array with Soldier increases)
Level 1: Rage, Unarmored Defense. Use a damaging bite when the benefit is worth one limited use. A separate Unarmed Strike can grapple, but a grapple does not trigger the bite.
Level 2: Reckless Attack and Danger Sense. Reckless Attack can make a Strength-based bite more reliable, which is what unlocks Drain or Strengthen.
Level 3: Path of the Berserker. If you use Reckless Attack while Rage is active, Frenzy adds extra damage to the first target you hit with a Strength-based attack on the turn, including an Unarmed Strike.
Level 4: ASI: STR to 18.
Level 5: Extra Attack. You can make a damaging bite for one attack and still use another attack for a weapon or Unarmed Strike.
Level 6: Mindless Rage. While Rage is active, you are immune to Charmed and Frightened; entering Rage also ends either condition on you.
Level 7: Feral Instinct. Advantage on Initiative gets you into grapple range before the enemy can reposition.
Level 8: ASI: CON to 17. This increases Vampiric Bite damage and your Hit Point total; take a different feat instead if the character needs a more focused combat tool.
Level 9: Brutal Strike unlocks as a core Barbarian feature. When you use Reckless Attack, you can give up Advantage on one qualifying Strength-based attack to add damage and a Brutal Strike effect if it hits.
Level 10: Retaliation lets you use your Reaction to make a melee weapon or Unarmed Strike against a creature within 5 feet after it damages you. At this level, your Proficiency Bonus is +4, so Vampiric Bite has four uses per Long Rest.
By level 10, this Dhampir Barbarian has a flexible emergency-healing option and a way to bank a bonus for a later attack or ability check. Grapples and shoves remain useful control options, but only a qualifying damaging bite can trigger Drain or Strengthen. Trace of Undeath helps whenever an encounter deals Necrotic damage.
Bottom Line
Dhampir rewards a specific shape of build: characters that can choose damaging Unarmed Strikes and want a limited source of sustain or a next-roll bonus. Spider Climb is a strong mobility trait on its own, and Trace of Undeath is a useful defensive layer when Necrotic damage appears. If your build never throws a fist, headbutt, or bite, most of the species' signature feature goes unused. Confirm Ravenloft content is on the table before you build one, and see the Ravenloft Character Options guide for the rest of the setting's options.
