The Short Answer

Use the Night Market Index to find an item's original source, then use that source and the campaign to decide whether it matters today. The official free reference groups published material into broad equipment categories and an items-by-company section. Its entries pair an item with its cost and source abbreviation, including a page reference where relevant. That makes it a fast research tool, not a rules replacement or an automatic purchase order.

Hot Take

The Index is at its best when it gives the crew a reason to stop shopping.

Once a search turns up three plausible items, the useful question is no longer which entry has the most impressive line. It is which source gives the crew a tool that fits the next job, and which seller, clinic, market, or favor makes that tool a story. Searching is quick. Getting something into Night City should still cost attention.

What The Index Actually Organizes

The publisher's January 2026 Night Market Index organizes its reference across weapons, armor, gear, cyberware, fashion, vehicles, NET material, lifestyle and housing, entertainment and services, Elflines Online material, and items by company. The first pages provide a legend for product abbreviations; the later sections let a reader begin with either the kind of problem they are trying to solve or a manufacturer they have encountered in play.

Start withUse it whenThe result you want
Equipment categoryThe crew knows the job problem but not the product.A short set of sources to investigate.
Items by companyThe crew knows a manufacturer, a seller, or an in-world lead.A way to connect a brand name to published material.
Source abbreviation legendA listing uses a product code you do not recognize. The full product name and the correct book or DLC to open.
Page referenceYou own or can access the cited product. The actual rule text, prerequisites, and exceptions.

The official Night Market Index is the authority for its own current listings and abbreviations. It is not the authority for changing the original item's rules.

Read A Listing In The Right Order

A listing gives you a research trail. Follow it in this order so a fast lookup does not become a false rule claim.

  1. Name the job problem: concealment, protection, mobility, a NET run, medical access, or a specific social scene.
  2. Find the relevant category or company entry in the Index.
  3. Decode the source abbreviation with the Index legend and note the cited page reference.
  4. Read the original entry for its full mechanics, prerequisites, and surrounding context.
  5. Ask whether the current campaign makes that item available through a Night Market, store, clinic, contact, Nomad family, client, or job reward.

This order catches the common mistakes. A source may include additional requirements the Index cannot summarize. A later collection may reprint related material without replacing the original source. And a published listing does not decide what a particular neighborhood is selling tonight.

What The Index Cannot Decide

The Index is intentionally broad. Its useful limits protect the game from becoming a catalog simulator.

The Index can tell youThe Index cannot tell you
Where a published entry originally appears.Whether the item fits your character, crew, or campaign tone.
Which broad equipment category or company to search.Every rule, prerequisite, exception, or interaction in the original text.
That a product has an item worth checking.Whether the GM's current market has it, or who is willing to sell it.
Which source you need next.Whether the crew should spend its money, time, or leverage on it.

The Cyberpunk RED Gear Guide explains the practical market side: Night Markets are curated, temporary, and social. A list of equipment is useful because it lets the table create a credible lead, not because it guarantees a shelf full of answers.

Turn A Search Into A Scene

The Index becomes most useful when it identifies what the crew must do next. Instead of announcing that an item is unavailable or silently approving it, turn the source trail into one concrete choice.

Index resultPlayable next question
The entry is in a book the crew owns.Does the local market have the category, and what would make the seller take this crew seriously?
The entry is in a DLC or a later product.Does the table want that source in this campaign, and who knows it exists?
Several similar entries appear.Which one supports the plan without creating a new access or maintenance problem?
The item comes from a company.Has that company, rival, collector, or representative already appeared in the crew's story?
The right source is not currently available.Does the Fixer find a lead, does the Tech adapt a solution, or does the crew change the plan?

The Cyberpunk RED Fixer Guide is the crew-facing route for making those questions social. Operator can provide a believable contact or introduction, but it should not erase price, trust, time, or risk.

Use It Without Expanding Your Campaign By Accident

The Index includes material from the Core Rulebook, books, boxed products, and DLC. That makes it especially easy to find an option from a source your table has not chosen to use. Treat that as information, not an obligation.

Before introducing an unfamiliar source, decide:

  1. Is this source allowed for this campaign?
  2. Does the group have access to the original text needed to use it correctly?
  3. Does the item add a new kind of job decision, or only a bigger number?
  4. Is it available through the current market fiction, or does locating it become a lead?

Use the Cyberpunk RED Sourcebooks Guide to decide what to add and when. It covers the Core Rulebook baseline, expansions, Interface RED collection boundaries, and why a later product should be a deliberate campaign choice.

The Five-Minute Index Check

When someone asks for a specific item, run this quick check:

  1. What job problem are we trying to solve?
  2. Which Index category or company gets us to the likely source?
  3. What does the original entry require or change?
  4. Who could make this available in the current campaign?
  5. What does acquiring it cost besides eurobucks?

If the group cannot answer the final two questions yet, the Index has done its job: it has given the GM and Fixer a specific lead to develop instead of a vague shopping request.

Where To Go Next

  • Return to the Cyberpunk RED Guide Hub for the complete live library.
  • Use the Cyberpunk RED Gear Guide for Night Market availability and job-first equipment choices.
  • Read the Cyberpunk RED Fixer Guide when a source trail needs a contact, negotiation, or market introduction.
  • Read the Cyberpunk RED Sourcebooks Guide before treating a listed book or DLC as automatic campaign content.
  • Browse the Cyberpunk RED guide directory for every live guide.

Sources And Scope

This guide was checked against the official Night Market Index, updated January 2026, and uses the Cyberpunk RED Core Rulebook only for the separate campaign and Night Market availability context. It does not reproduce the Index's item listings, prices, source table, company table, or equipment rules. Use the Index to locate the original source and use that source for exact text and mechanics.
