The Short Answer

A cyberweapon is valuable when it changes access to a job, not when it merely adds one more way to start a fight. Integrated weapons can let a character carry a contingency through a search, keep a hand free until the moment it matters, or make an extraction plan possible. They also come with a real build cost: the correct foundation or body location, compatible capacity, Humanity Loss, an exact item entry, and consequences for the limb while the weapon is deployed.

Start with the scene the crew needs to solve. Then read the exact weapon entry, confirm the installation path with the Cyberware Slots Guide, and decide whether the job actually benefits from an integrated answer instead of a carried one.

Hot Take

The best cyberweapon is often the one that keeps a job from becoming a firefight. A concealed contingency can protect a courier after a bad pat-down, create an opening during an extraction, or give a crew member a credible last resort. That is more interesting than building every scene around a surprise attack.

If the campaign is deliberately loud, a cyberweapon can absolutely support that tone. Even then, name the objective it protects - getting someone out, holding a route, stopping a pursuer, or buying the Netrunner time - so the install creates a choice rather than an automatic escalation.

What Counts As A Cyberweapon

The Core Rulebook describes cyberweapons as implanted weapons, usually specialized versions of ranged or melee weapons. That definition is useful, but it is not a license to treat all installed weapons as interchangeable. A popup ranged weapon, an arm-mounted blade, a foot option, and a concealed cyberfinger can have different prerequisites, capacity needs, concealment rules, ammunition limits, and restrictions while in use.

Read the specific entry from the installation outward:

CheckWhat to establishWhy it matters
Foundation or locationWhether the item needs a Cyberarm, Cyberleg, Cyberhand option, or another defined body location. The weapon may be illegal for the current build before its combat effect matters.
Capacity and exclusivityWhich Option Slots it uses and whether the source gives it a special limb restriction.A legal foundation can still be full, paired, or otherwise committed.
DeploymentWhat changes when the weapon extends, pops up, or is readied. The limb may stop being available for ordinary manipulation.
OperationThe weapon's own ammunition, reload, attachment, and action rules.Integration does not erase the weapon's normal operational pressures.
ConsequencesHumanity Loss, clinic access, cost, visibility, and story attention.Chrome should remain a character and campaign decision.

The Cyberpunk RED Cyberware Guide explains the broader prerequisite, Humanity, and installation framework. Use this guide to choose the weapon's job within that framework, not to replace the source entry.

Decide Whether The Weapon Is Part Of The Plan

An integrated weapon has a different value proposition than a carried weapon. It can be present when gear must stay concealed, but it commits part of the character's body and often narrows what that body part can do at a crucial moment.

Crew objectiveWhat an integrated weapon can addQuestion to ask before installation
Quiet accessA backup when visible weapons are screened or inappropriate. If it comes out, has the quiet plan already failed?
Protective detailA rapidly available response while escorting a client.Does the response protect the client, or pull danger toward them?
Capture or retrievalA specialized way to create space or control a target. Is the crew prepared to secure, move, and explain the target afterward?
EscapeA last-resort opening when the primary exit closes. What route, vehicle, or ally turns that opening into an actual escape?
Loud breachA close-in option when the team expects resistance.Would a carried weapon, armor, or a different approach serve the breach better?

This is why a cyberweapon should be chosen alongside the crew's route, cover story, and exit plan. A weapon that exists only because it is stylish can still be fun, but a weapon that gives the group a new answer under pressure earns its permanent cost.

The Hand Is Still Doing A Job

Several Core Rulebook popup options are concealed and can be drawn or stowed without spending an action. That is a powerful access advantage. The tradeoff is equally important: while a popup weapon is deployed, the hand cannot hold another item. Arm-installed melee options have comparable practical limits while they are being used.

Do not let an impressive deployment detail hide the physical question: what was that hand doing a second ago? Holding a client, operating a door, carrying a shield, working a console, climbing a ladder, managing a tool, or driving a vehicle can all matter more than a surprise draw.

At the table, resolve that before the roll:

  1. State what the limb is holding or operating.
  2. Read the exact entry's deployment and concealment language.
  3. Decide what must be dropped, stowed, transferred, or abandoned.
  4. Make the weapon choice part of the crew's timing instead of an invisible free upgrade.

That small discipline makes cyberweapons feel integrated with the scene. It also gives a Solo, Tech, or bodyguard character opportunities to coordinate with the rest of the team instead of acting in a separate equipment minigame.

Build Around The Installation, Not The Weapon Name

The Core Rulebook includes examples across cyberarms and cyberlegs, including popup weapons and installed melee options. Some entries can be the only cyberware in a natural limb; others rely on a cyberlimb or a more specific foundation. Black Chrome adds more specialized choices, including additional concealed arm options and cyberfinger weapons that require the appropriate cyberhand foundation.

The correct process is therefore not "find a weapon, then make it fit." It is:

  1. Identify the character's existing foundation and available capacity.
  2. Check whether the selected entry has a special body-location or exclusivity condition.
  3. Read the item for its operating constraints, not just its attack profile.
  4. Recheck Humanity Loss, money, and downtime with the player and GM.
  5. Give the install a source in the fiction: a clinic, a market lead, a favor, or a debt.

Read the Cyberware Slots Guide before assuming a spare slot means a weapon will fit. A cyberweapon that consumes the limb's future options is still a valid choice; it simply needs to be a deliberate one.

Use The Night Market Index As A Locator

The official Night Market Index groups published cyberware and identifies source entries across the Core Rulebook, Black Chrome, and other products. It is excellent for finding whether a category has a published option. It is not a substitute for the item text, and it is not a promise that a local clinic or Night Market stocks the item.

Use it in this order:

  1. Search Cyberware for the kind of integrated tool or weapon the character needs.
  2. Note the product and page reference.
  3. Read the original entry for prerequisites, capacity, operation, and exceptions.
  4. Ask the GM what market, clinic, contact, or job can make it available.

The Cyberpunk RED Gear Guide covers the wider market-access question. It is the right companion when an integrated weapon creates a Fixer lead, a scarcity problem, or a reason to visit a specific Night Market rather than a generic storefront.

A Five-Minute Cyberweapon Check

Before surgery or a session where the weapon will matter, confirm these points together:

  • What recurring job or contingency does this solve?
  • Does the character have the exact required foundation, body location, and capacity?
  • What cannot that limb hold or do while the weapon is deployed?
  • What source entry governs ammunition, reloads, attachments, concealment, and unusual effects?
  • What Humanity, money, recovery, and future upgrade choices does the installation create?
  • How does the crew obtain, maintain, and keep the weapon available in this campaign?

If the answers produce a clear scene plan, the cyberweapon is doing more than adding a stat line. If the answers are vague, the crew may be better served by a carried weapon, a contact, a tool, or a plan that avoids the fight entirely.

Where To Go Next

  • Return to the Cyberpunk RED Cyberware Guide for the live hub on chrome, Humanity, prerequisites, and care.
  • Read the Cyberware Slots Guide before committing a limb's capacity to an integrated weapon.
  • Use the Cyberpunk RED Gear Guide to turn an item source into a Night Market, contact, or availability decision.
  • Read the Cyberpunk RED Weapons Guide before deciding that an installed weapon is better than a carried loadout.
  • Read the Cyberpunk RED Solo guide when a combat specialist needs to turn an integrated weapon into a crew role instead of a solo stunt.
  • Return to the Cyberpunk RED Guide Hub for every live guide.
  • Browse the Cyberpunk RED guide directory for every live guide.

The Cyberpunk RED Weapons Guide compares carried loadouts by range, concealment, ammunition, attachments, quality, and the crew objective. Use the original source entry for exact weapon procedures and this guide for the decisions around an integrated installation.
