The Short Answer
Cyberpunk RED is not a patch for Cyberpunk 2020. It is a new edition with a later default era and its own table procedures. Returning players will recognize the dark future, ten-sided-die checks, familiar Role names, cyberware pressure, and the need to look cool while surviving a bad deal. They should still make a clean start with RED's Core Rulebook instead of carrying values, character sheets, or remembered NET habits across unchanged.
For a brand-new group, the verdict is simple: start with Cyberpunk RED. R. Talsorian Games describes it as the latest edition, set in 2045 between Cyberpunk 2020 and Cyberpunk 2077, and identifies the Core Rulebook as the complete game. Pick Cyberpunk 2020 only when the table specifically wants its earlier-era experience and wants to learn that edition as its own game.

Hot Take
Nostalgia is a terrible rules reference. A returning player who says "we always did it this way" may be describing a beloved Cyberpunk 2020 table, a house rule, or a different edition entirely. That history is useful flavor. It should not outrank the rulebook the group chose for tonight.
The better way to bring a 2020 veteran into RED is to give them an immediate job, a crew connection, and one reason to use the new procedure. Let the Solo protect an extraction, let the Fixer find a route, and let the Netrunner work an on-site access point while the rest of the crew buys time. The game will explain itself in play faster than an argument over remembered charts.
What Carries Over And What Does Not
The official publisher page describes RED as an updated edition, not a reprint, and places it after the Fourth Corporate War. The shared setting language can make the transition feel familiar, but the important play choices are in the current rules.
| Familiar idea | Cyberpunk 2020 evidence | Cyberpunk RED table impact |
|---|---|---|
| Character identity | The official 2020 quick sheet lists a Handle, Role, Career Skill, Skills, cybernetics, and its own STAT block. | RED has its own character sheet, Skills, Role Abilities, Lifepath material, and character-generation procedures. Make the RED character rather than translating a sheet by eye. |
| The core dice language | Both games use ten-sided dice as part of their Cyberpunk rules lineage. | Learn RED's current STAT + Skill + 1d10 procedure and Difficulty Values from the Core Rulebook. Do not assume an older modifier, chart, or derived value still applies. |
| A Netrunner in the crew | Cyberpunk 2020 supports the classic cyberpunk hacker role. | RED's Netrunner uses Interface in a NET Architecture with distinct NET Actions alongside Meat Actions, so the player can remain part of the same physical job. |
| The setting | The official 2020 page presents the earlier corporate dark future; RED is officially set in 2045 after the Fourth Corporate War. | Treat the era as a campaign decision. The city, available technology, and reasons to take a job have changed along with the rules. |
The point is not that one edition is more "real" Cyberpunk than the other. They are different tabletop products serving different moments in the setting. A returning group gets the best RED experience by preserving the energy of its old campaign while letting the current book settle the mechanics.
Skills And Stats: Read The New Sheet First
The official Cyberpunk 2020 quick sheet displays nine STAT labels: INT, REF, TECH, COOL, ATTR, LUCK, MA, BODY, and EMP. RED's Core Rulebook displays ten: INT, REF, DEX, TECH, COOL, WILL, LUCK, MOVE, BODY, and EMP. That alone is enough reason not to carry an old character's numbers forward as if the sheets were interchangeable.
The practical change is not a memory test. In RED, choose the STAT and Skill the current procedure names, then build around what the crew will actually ask your character to do. A familiar-sounding Skill or Role should prompt a check of the RED text, not an automatic import of an older ruling.
| When a returning player says... | Use this RED habit instead |
|---|---|
| "My old sheet has the number for this." | Find the current RED STAT, Skill, and any relevant Role Ability before rolling. |
| "That was my Career Skill." | Check the RED Role Ability and Skill list. Role identity survives, but its procedure is the one in the Core Rulebook. |
| "We used a different derived value." | Use RED's current character sheet and current rules. Do not reconstruct a value from an older sheet. |
| "Can I rebuild my old concept?" | Yes. Start from the concept, not its old numbers: job, contacts, problem-solving niche, chrome, and crew tie. |
This is good news for a conversion-minded table. You do not have to preserve a character's arithmetic to preserve who they are. A Media can still chase a story, a Nomad can still keep a route open, and a Solo can still be frighteningly competent. Rebuild the character's purpose with RED's choices.
Netrunning Becomes A Crew Job
RED's Netrunning is deliberately anchored to the job site. The Core Rulebook has the Netrunner jack in or out of a NET Architecture within 6 m/yds of an access point. It separates the runner's Meat Actions from NET Actions and gives an active runner three NET Actions on their turn. The rest of the crew therefore has a concrete reason to secure space, move toward the access point, manage guards, and protect the runner.
That is the essential adjustment for a 2020 veteran: run the Architecture the job needs, at the place the job happens. RED's setting also explains why - the Fourth Corporate War and R.A.B.I.D.S. shattered the old NET, leaving fragmented or corrupted Nodes and making broad NET travel dangerous.
| Netrunning expectation | RED's working question |
|---|---|
| "What can my Netrunner do alone from far away?" | "Which NET Architecture is part of this job, and where is its access point?" |
| "The hacking scene happens away from the crew." | "What is the crew protecting, opening, stealing, or shutting down while the runner advances?" |
| "We will learn every program before session one." | "What specific system does this job require us to control or breach?" |
Read the Cyberpunk RED Netrunning Guide before buying a cyberdeck or building an Architecture. It explains the current rules structure in enough context to make the runner's turn add pressure to the entire table instead of splitting it into a separate game.
Character Creation: Build A RED Crew, Not A Converted Spreadsheet
RED gives a group three character-generation routes: Streetrat, Edgerunner, and Complete Package. Streetrat uses guided templates; Edgerunner customizes a template; Complete Package spends points and makes the full set of choices. The publisher's RED overview also makes clear that the complete game includes character creation and that Roles are not the only part of a character that matters.
For a new group, use the route that gets everyone to a shared first job with enough confidence to play. For a returning group, choose the route that best recreates the function of old characters without pretending their old mechanics transfer directly.
| Group situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone is new to tabletop Cyberpunk | Streetrat or Edgerunner, then a first job. | The table learns the game through a useful crew instead of optimizing in a vacuum. |
| Returning players want a fast RED campaign | Edgerunner. | It offers room to reshape a familiar concept while keeping the build focused. |
| Veterans want to explore the full RED build process | Complete Package. | It supports deliberate choices, but it still requires the Core Rulebook as the rules authority. |
| A group wants to keep a favorite 2020 character's story | Rebuild the concept in RED. | Preserve the contacts, motive, scars, and job niche; choose new RED values and abilities. |
Start with the Cyberpunk RED Beginner's Guide for a first-session route. Use the Cyberpunk RED Sourcebooks Guide only after the core crew and campaign need are clear. More options will not make an uncertain conversion cleaner.
The Clear Verdict For A New Group
Start a new group with Cyberpunk RED's Core Rulebook. It is the current complete tabletop foundation for the 2045 game, with current character creation, rules, setting material, and support for a continuing campaign. Begin with a crew that needs one another, use the current character sheets, and let the first job teach the rules that matter.
Choose Cyberpunk 2020 if the earlier era and its specific edition are the thing your group actively wants. That is a valid choice, not a historical mistake. It is simply a separate decision from "we want to start a new Cyberpunk tabletop campaign," and it should come with the 2020 rules rather than a partial conversion to RED.
