## Introduction

Piney (The Old Margeve) are plant-touched humanoids shaped by the old forest. Mechanically, they are one of the best defensive lineages in the expanded roster: broad save advantages, a reaction AC boost against melee attacks, and a sunlight-based recovery tool that can return expended hit dice during short rests.

Piney does not break map geometry the way Avian Beastkin flight or Erina burrowing does. It makes you harder to disable and harder to hit in melee, and it keeps you fed and rested in wilderness play. That is often better than it looks.

## Lineage Traits

### Rating Key

- <span style={{ color: '#ef4444' }}>●</span> **Red** — Bad.
- <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span> **Orange** — Situational.
- <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span> **Green** — Good.
- <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span> **Blue** — Fantastic.

Options from The Old Margeve are marked with `(The Old Margeve)`.

### Flexible Size <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

Piney can be Medium or Small. Medium is the stronger default for most martial builds; Small supports stealth and tight-space concepts but creates Heavy weapon restrictions.

### Hybrid Humanoid <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

Advantage on saves against exhaustion, paralysis, petrification, and effects that would make you fall unconscious. This is a broad anti-disable suite that matters against traps, monsters, magic, and environmental attrition.

### Living Wood <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

When a visible attacker would hit you with a melee attack, use a reaction to increase AC by PB against that attack. Uses equal PB per long rest. This scales naturally and gives every Piney a defensive panic button that remains relevant all campaign.

### Photosynthetic <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

One hour in sunlight or natural bright light satisfies daily food needs. A short rest entirely in that light can recover expended hit dice up to PB, once per long rest. This is excellent in outdoor campaigns and merely flavor in deep-dungeon play.

## Best Classes for Piney

### Druid <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

The strongest thematic fit and a very good mechanical one. Druid likes the anti-disable saves and the wilderness sustain.

### Fighter <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

Living Wood is excellent on melee Fighters because it can turn a meaningful hit into a miss without changing the class's action economy.

### Cleric <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

Frontline Clerics appreciate defensive reactions and broad anti-disable saves. Photosynthetic is a nice wilderness bonus.

### Ranger <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

Ranger makes good use of outdoor recovery and nature flavor. Living Wood helps when enemies close distance.

### Wizard <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

Piney Wizard is surprisingly solid. Living Wood gives emergency melee protection, and Hybrid Humanoid helps against effects that would remove the Wizard from the fight.

## Heritage Pairings

**[Old Ways (The Old Margeve)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#old-ways-the-old-margeve)** <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>
The most coherent Piney pairing: Nature, Survival, druidcraft, and better reading of plants and beasts.

**[Grove](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#grove)** <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>
Climb speed and natural stealth make the forest-body fantasy mechanically active.

**[Forest Bastion (The Old Margeve)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#forest-bastion-the-old-margeve)** <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>
Great for characters who bridge forest life and civilization. Flexible skills and a social reroll add breadth.

**[Cottage](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#cottage)** <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>
Adds long-rest temp HP support. Piney already plays well as a steady, sustaining party member.

**[Martial Law (Book of Blades)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#martial-law-book-of-blades)** <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>
Works for a shield-line Piney or disciplined forest defender. Bonus-action Help pairs well with a lineage that already wants to stay standing near allies.

**[Privileged (Book of Blades)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#privileged-book-of-blades)** <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span>
Mostly a campaign-tone pick. It can support a strange court emissary or noble garden-spirit concept, but Piney usually wants nature or endurance heritages first.

### Player's Guide 2 Heritage Options

**[Feysworn (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#feysworn-players-guide-2)** is the strongest new fit for piney tied to fey forests and old woodland bargains.

**[Kithren (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#kithren-players-guide-2)** supports found kin and root-bound grove families.

**[Waterside (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#waterside-players-guide-2)** works for piney from river groves and rain-fed marsh woodlands.

## Hot Takes

> **Hot Take:** Piney (The Old Margeve) is the best defensive caster lineage in the expanded set. Living Wood is not as broad as shield, but it gives Wizards, Witches, Sorcerers, and Theurges a PB-scaling melee answer without spending a spell slot. That matters more than another ribbon skill.

> **Hot Take:** Photosynthetic is underrated because people read the food clause and stop. The hit dice recovery clause is the real feature. In outdoor campaigns, Piney can stretch adventuring days in a way most lineages simply cannot.

## Final Notes

Piney (The Old Margeve) is a defensive endurance lineage. It is strongest when the campaign includes natural light, wilderness travel, and melee pressure. Build Piney when you want your ancestry to keep you standing, not when you want it to solve every encounter with one spectacular trick.
