## Introduction

Alseid (The Old Margeve) are deer-bodied woodland humanoids built for speed, stealth, and wilderness awareness. They are not just "forest centaurs." Mechanically, they are grounded skirmishers with a 40-foot base speed, excellent senses, advantage on Stealth, no-track movement, and strong defenses against fear and exhaustion.

The tradeoff is physical shape. Quadruped makes humanoid architecture more awkward: ladders, stairs, trapdoors, manholes, and similar structures can become difficult terrain or force squeezing when a normal Medium creature would move freely. That does not ruin the lineage, but it changes where the lineage is strongest. Alseid thrive in forests, open terrain, roads, camps, ruins, and natural caves. They are less comfortable in vertical dungeons and cramped cities.

## Lineage Traits

### Rating Key

- <span style={{ color: '#ef4444' }}>●</span> **Red** — Bad.
- <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span> **Orange** — Situational.
- <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span> **Green** — Good.
- <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span> **Blue** — Fantastic.

Options from The Old Margeve are marked with `(The Old Margeve)`.

### 40-Foot Speed <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

A permanent 40-foot walking speed is a huge level-one advantage. It improves kiting, scouting, closing distance, retreating, repositioning, and moving through difficult terrain. Unlike flight or teleportation, it does not require a resource or special action.

### Heightened Senses <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

Advantage on Perception checks relying on sight or hearing, plus better function in dim light and light obscurement. This is one of the strongest passive scouting packages in ToV. It does not replace darkvision, but it makes Alseid extremely reliable in the environments where they are supposed to excel.

### Hybrid Humanoid <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

Advantage on saves against exhaustion and frightened. Exhaustion resistance matters in wilderness campaigns, forced marches, harsh travel, and Old Margeve survival play. Frightened resistance matters against bosses, undead, dragons, fey, and shadow-themed monsters.

### Light Hooves <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

Advantage on DEX (Stealth) checks and optional trackless movement. This is elite exploration tech. A Ranger or Rogue with Light Hooves becomes very hard to detect and even harder to pursue.

### Quadruped <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span>

This is the cost of the package. Humanoid architecture is awkward for you. In the wrong campaign, that becomes a constant tax; in a wilderness-heavy campaign, it is mostly a reminder that you are not built like everyone else.

## Best Classes for Alseid

### Ranger <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

The cleanest fit. Ranger turns speed, tracking, stealth, Perception, and wilderness control into one package. Alseid Ranger feels mechanically native to The Old Margeve.

### Rogue <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

Light Hooves plus Rogue stealth is excellent. The 40-foot speed gives you more room to kite, reposition, and escape after Cunning Action.

### Monk <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

Monk stacks movement on top of movement. You become a fast, hard-to-pin skirmisher, though Quadruped may create table questions around some environments.

### Druid <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

Druid appreciates the nature identity, exhaustion defense, and scouting tools. The lineage does not boost spellcasting directly, but it makes the Druid better at moving through and reading wild spaces.

### Fighter <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

Archery Fighters and light skirmishers benefit most. Heavy-armor melee Fighters still like speed and fear defense, but they do less with stealth.

## Heritage Pairings

**[Forest Bastion (The Old Margeve)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#forest-bastion-the-old-margeve)** <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>
The default Old Margeve pairing. It adds Animal Handling or Nature, trapper's tools, and a social reroll against urban-born creatures.

**[Old Ways (The Old Margeve)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#old-ways-the-old-margeve)** <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>
Nature and Survival proficiency, druidcraft, and the ability to read beasts, plants, and vegetation. Excellent for the "forest speaker" concept.

**[Wildlands](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#wildlands)** <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>
Animal interaction and passive deterrence against low-CR beasts. Strong if the campaign treats animals as encounters rather than scenery.

**[Grove](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#grove)** <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>
Climb speed and natural stealth support. Some overlap with Light Hooves, but the package reinforces wilderness scouting.

**[Martial Law (Book of Blades)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#martial-law-book-of-blades)** <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>
The best Book of Blades fit for an Alseid skirmisher. Athletics, Intimidation, light armor, weapons, and bonus-action Help all support a disciplined battlefield scout.

**[Horse Lord (Book of Blades)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#horse-lord-book-of-blades)** <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span>
Strong cultural flavor for plains and herd societies, but Expert Trainer improves a horse, not the Alseid. Take it if the campaign actually includes horse handling, herds, or mounted allies.

### Player's Guide 2 Heritage Options

**[Feysworn (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#feysworn-players-guide-2)** is the strongest new fit for alseid tied to fey woods, old bargains, or immortal courts.

**[Joymonger (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#joymonger-players-guide-2)** and **[Kithren (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/heritage-guide#kithren-players-guide-2)** support herd, festival, and close-community alseid concepts.

## Hot Takes

> **Hot Take:** Alseid (The Old Margeve) is not a worse Beastkin. It is a more honest scout. Avian Beastkin wins raw movement because flight breaks encounters. Alseid wins grounded wilderness play because 40-foot speed, passive stealth advantage, no-track movement, and Heightened Senses all fire constantly without needing the table to support aerial tactics.

> **Hot Take:** Quadruped is the only thing keeping Alseid balanced. Without the architecture drawback, this lineage would be close to automatic for Rangers and Rogues. The drawback matters because most campaigns eventually go indoors. If your campaign never does, Alseid is stronger than its rating suggests.

## Final Notes

Alseid (The Old Margeve) is best when the campaign gives you forests, roads, ruins, hunting grounds, and pursuit scenes. If your game is mostly stone dungeons and vertical city spaces, the lineage still works, but you are paying for traits you will use less often. Build Alseid when you want speed and stealth to define the character from session one.
