## Introduction

Metamagic is the Sorcerer's real class identity. The spell list matters, subclasses matter, and sorcery point recovery matters, but Metamagic is what makes the same spell behave differently in your hands than it would in a Wizard's spellbook.

This guide uses the local [Tales of the Valiant Sorcerer Guide](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/class-guides/tov-sorcerer-guide), the ToV Player's Guide material already represented in the article set, and Player's Guide 2 notes for the newer Sorcerer options.

Player's Guide 2 adds four general Metamagic options: Bewildering Spell, Emotional Spell, Fearful Spell, and Relentless Spell. It also gives Sacred Sorcerers Metamagic: Divine Spell, a subclass option that can combine with other Metamagic and does not count against normal known picks.

Labyrinth Worldbook adds Umbral (Labyrinth Worldbook), which does not add new general Metamagic but does change the math. Fade Away costs 2 SP, Night's Veil costs 4 SP, and the subclass wants enough fuel left over for Retain Spell, Heightened Spell, or Careful Spell when the darkness plan depends on a spell sticking.

The short version: do not pick Metamagic in isolation. Pick a spell plan first, then choose the Metamagic that multiplies that plan.

Book of Blades does not add new Sorcerer Metamagic in the local material reviewed here. Player's Guide 2 does. When this guide mentions Book of Blades, it is talking about indirect support through backgrounds, heritages, and talents.

## Metamagic Progression

| Sorcerer Level | Metamagic Known | Practical Meaning |
| -------------- | --------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| 2 | 2 | Your core playstyle comes online early |
| 6 | 3 | Add your first specialization or defensive option |
| 13 | 4 | Add a late-game efficiency or nova option |
| 18 | 5 | Round out the kit for high-level encounter complexity |

At 2nd level, take options you will actually use every session. The usual mistake is taking one option for a spell you do not know yet and another option that only matters in rare terrain or social scenes. Your first two picks should affect your most common combat turns.

## Core Metamagic Options Ranked

### Heightened Spell <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 3 SP

Heightened Spell is the boss-killer option. One target has disadvantage on its first save against the spell. That is expensive, but it is exactly what you want when a single failed save can decide the encounter.

**Best pairings:** Dominate-style spells, Hold effects, Polymorph-style control, high-value debuffs, and any spell where one target failing matters more than raw damage.

**Hot take:** Heightened Spell is not for every spell. It is for the spell you cannot afford to watch a boss casually save against.

### Quickened Spell <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 2 SP

Quickened Spell turns a 1-action spell into a bonus action spell. The key restriction is that you cannot cast two spells of 1st circle or higher on the same turn. The normal use is Quickened leveled spell plus an action cantrip, or Quickened cantrip plus a non-spell action.

**Best pairings:** Fireball plus Fire Bolt, control spell plus damage cantrip, emergency repositioning turns, and any turn where your action would otherwise be underused.

**Hot take:** Quickened Spell is not "two big spells." It is "my big spell did not cost my whole turn."

### Twinned Spell <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 1 SP for cantrips; 1 + spell circle for leveled spells

Twinned Spell targets a second creature with an eligible single-target spell. The ToV cost makes high-circle twinning expensive, but cantrip twinning stays efficient.

**Best pairings:** Single-target cantrips, low-circle control, single-target buffs, and spells where two affected creatures changes the fight.

**Watch-out:** Do not build around twinning expensive high-circle spells unless your sorcery point economy can survive it.

### Careful Spell <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 1 SP

Careful Spell lets selected allies automatically succeed on saves against your AOE spells. If your party has melee frontliners, summoned creatures, or clustered fights, this is the difference between "I cannot cast the good spell" and "I can cast it now."

**Best pairings:** Fireball-style AOE, control areas that catch allies, and any party where melee characters pin enemies in place.

**Hot take:** Careful Spell is not exciting, but it turns bad party positioning into permission to cast.

### Bewildering Spell (Player's Guide 2) <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 2 SP

Bewildering Spell gives a specifically targeted creature disadvantage on the next saving throw it makes within 1 minute, other than the save against the current spell. It is a setup option, not an immediate payoff option.

**Best pairings:** Two-caster parties, Sorcerers with strong follow-up save spells, Abominable fear/control builds, and boss fights where your party can coordinate turn order.

**Hot take:** Bewildering Spell is excellent if your table talks tactics. If everyone fires at random targets, it becomes a very expensive sticky note.

### Retain Spell <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 2 SP

Retain Spell gives advantage on concentration checks for that spell and prevents incapacitation from automatically ending concentration. That second clause is the reason this is more than a simple defensive rider.

**Best pairings:** Hypnotic Pattern, Wall of Fire, Haste-style buffs, control spells, and any concentration effect that would swing the fight if it stays up.

**Book of Blades note:** [Combat Casting](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#combat-casting) and Retain Spell attack the same problem from different angles. Concentration-heavy Sorcerers often want both.

### Empowered Spell <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 1 SP

Empowered Spell rerolls damage dice up to your CHA modifier and can combine with one other Metamagic option. That combination clause makes it a clean damage rider on turns where you already spent points on the important part of the spell.

**Best pairings:** Fireball, Chain Lightning, and any spell with many damage dice.

### Relentless Spell (Player's Guide 2) <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 1 SP

Relentless Spell lets you reroll a missed spell attack and keep the new result. It can be used even if another Metamagic option was already used during the casting, which makes it a clean accuracy safety net for attack-roll spells.

**Best pairings:** Ray and ranged spell attack builds, Teleporting Harrier attack turns, Draconic blasters with attack-roll spells, and any Sorcerer who hates watching a high-value spell say hello to the wall.

**Hot take:** Relentless Spell is not glamorous. It is a seatbelt. Seatbelts are also not glamorous until the cart hits a tree.

### Flexible Spell <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 1 SP

Flexible Spell changes a spell's damage type to any type except psychic. This is excellent when resistance would otherwise punish your narrow known-spell list.

**Best pairings:** Draconic Sorcerers, element-themed builds, and campaigns where monster resistances matter.

### Divine Spell (Sacred, Player's Guide 2) <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 1 SP

Divine Spell is a Sacred Sorcerer subclass Metamagic. It does not count against your normal known options, and it can be used even if you already used another Metamagic option during the casting. When you roll spell damage, you replace half the damage with radiant for Celestial or necrotic for Fiendish.

**Best pairings:** Sacred Sorcerers, resistance-management turns, Celestial radiant builds, Fiendish necrotic builds, and any spell where splitting damage types helps punch through a defensive profile.

**Hot take:** Divine Spell is a free extra knob on the Sacred control panel. Use it. That is why the button is there.

### Hunting Spell <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 2 SP

Hunting Spell makes the spell deal half damage even on a successful save. This is a reliability option for damage spells, especially against enemies with strong saves.

**Best pairings:** Fireball-style spells and any damaging save spell that feels awful when the target saves for no meaningful result.

### Emotional Spell (Player's Guide 2) <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 3 SP

Emotional Spell changes a spell's saving throw to Charisma, with a low-Intelligence limitation. This is outstanding against enemies with poor Charisma saves and unimpressive against creatures whose force of personality is their whole problem.

**Best pairings:** Monster-knowledge-heavy parties, intrigue campaigns, and Sorcerers who can identify when Charisma is the weak point before spending 3 SP.

**Hot take:** Emotional Spell is a test of whether your character knows what they are fighting. Guess wrong and you paid 3 SP to make the spell more theatrical.

### Fearful Spell (Player's Guide 2) <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 3 SP

Fearful Spell frightens one creature damaged by your spell until the end of your next turn. The limitation to one target keeps it from becoming automatic on AOE damage, but frighten is still real control when positioning matters.

**Best pairings:** Abominable Sorcerers, Fiendish Sacred Sorcerers, damage spells that hit priority melee threats, and parties that punish frightened enemies trying to reposition.

**Hot take:** Fearful Spell is expensive because fear is not just a debuff; it is a traffic cone for monsters with poor emotional regulation.

### Shielding Spell <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 2 SP

Shielding Spell gives temporary HP equal to 3 times the spell circle. It is best when you are already spending a high-circle slot and expect immediate pressure afterward.

**Best users:** Draconic Sorcerers who still get targeted, Flora Sorcerers playing closer to terrain control, and any Sorcerer in a dangerous back-line campaign.

### Subtle Spell <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 1 SP

Subtle Spell removes verbal and somatic components. It is table-dependent, but in the right campaign it is irreplaceable: silence, surveillance, social casting, imprisonment, and counter-magic all make this better.

**Hot take:** Subtle Spell is either forgettable or campaign-defining. Ask what kind of game you are playing before you spend the known pick.

### Extended Spell <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 1 SP

Extended Spell doubles concentration spell duration, with a minimum of 10 minutes for 1-minute spells and a maximum of 24 hours for longer effects. This is more about adventure prep than combat turns.

**Best users:** Utility Sorcerers, exploration campaigns, and parties that plan before entering danger.

### Distant Spell <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 1 SP

Distant Spell increases range by 100 feet or turns touch range into 30 feet. This is narrow because many Arcane spells already have enough range, but touch-to-30-feet can matter.

**Best users:** back-line support Sorcerers, dangerous terrain campaigns, and builds that routinely want touch effects without standing next to the target.

### Lucky Spell <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 2 SP

Lucky Spell adds your current Luck total to a missed spell attack without spending the Luck. That is only as good as your spell attack plan and your Luck count.

**Best users:** attack-roll Sorcerers and builds that deliberately stack Luck.

### Enlarged Spell <span style={{ color: '#ef4444' }}>●</span>

**Cost:** 3 SP

Enlarged Spell expands self-centered AOEs. The effect is real, but 3 SP is a steep cost for geometry unless your build is repeatedly casting those exact spells from dangerous positions.

**Best users:** niche melee-range Sorcerers and tables with grid tactics where a few extra feet regularly catch extra targets.

## Best Starting Packages

**Blaster:** Careful Spell + Empowered Spell
This is the clean AOE package. Careful Spell lets you cast around allies, and Empowered Spell smooths bad damage rolls.

**Boss Controller:** Heightened Spell + Retain Spell
Heightened helps the spell land. Retain helps the spell stay. This is the package for Sorcerers who win by deleting enemy turns.

**Action Economy Attacker:** Quickened Spell + Twinned Spell
Quickened creates spell + cantrip turns. Twinned makes single-target cantrips and low-circle spells hit more bodies.

**Elemental Specialist:** Flexible Spell + Empowered Spell
Flexible Spell keeps your element plan alive through resistance. Empowered Spell improves the damage roll once the spell matters.

**Intrigue Sorcerer:** Subtle Spell + Heightened Spell
Subtle gets the spell into the scene. Heightened makes the important target fail.

**Player's Guide 2 Save Setup:** Heightened Spell + Bewildering Spell
Heightened lands the first spell. Bewildering makes the next save worse. This is for players who enjoy turn order, teamwork, and watching a boss slowly realize the agenda was set two rounds ago.

**Player's Guide 2 Attack-Roll Caster:** Relentless Spell + Empowered Spell
Relentless fixes the miss. Empowered fixes the sad damage roll. It is not subtle, but neither is pointing concentrated magic at someone.

## Subclass Priorities

### Chaos Sorcerer

Chaos Sorcerers already live in variance. Take options that make the important spell reliable or turn chaotic windows into better turns.

**Best picks:** Heightened Spell, Quickened Spell, Retain Spell, Twinned Spell.

### Draconic Sorcerer

Draconic Sorcerers want damage type discipline and strong damage turns. Flexible Spell is more important here than it is for most Sorcerers because resistance can shut down a themed element plan.

**Best picks:** Careful Spell, Empowered Spell, Flexible Spell, Quickened Spell, Heightened Spell.

### Flora Sorcerer (The Old Margeve)

Flora already gets Floral Metamagic at 7th level, so your normal Metamagic choices should either support control or protect concentration. Do not over-invest in cute riders if your terrain-control spell drops after one hit.

**Best picks:** Retain Spell, Heightened Spell, Careful Spell, Extended Spell, Quickened Spell.

### Abominable Sorcerer (Player's Guide 2)

Abominable wants fear pressure, save setup, and concentration protection. Its origin spells already push mental control, curses, tentacles, and "please stop touching my mind" energy.

**Best picks:** Bewildering Spell, Fearful Spell, Heightened Spell, Retain Spell, Subtle Spell.

**Bewildering Spell** sets up the next control save, which is exactly what a subclass with fear, curses, confusion, and mass suggestion wants.

**Fearful Spell** stacks with the subclass's frightening identity. Do not spam it, but use it when one enemy needs to back off or lose tempo.

### Cyclonic Sorcerer (Player's Guide 2)

Cyclonic rewards lightning/thunder commitment, movement, and spell turns that also change positioning. It wants Metamagic that keeps storm damage relevant and lets the caster exploit good angles.

**Best picks:** Flexible Spell, Empowered Spell, Careful Spell, Relentless Spell, Quickened Spell.

**Flexible Spell** is the big one because it can help push spells into lightning/thunder identity for Fulminated Magic, subject to GM timing rulings. If your table agrees the spell now deals the chosen type when cast, Cyclonic gets paid.

**Relentless Spell** is better here than usual if you are leaning into attack-roll storm spells or Teleporting Harrier turns.

### Sacred Sorcerer (Player's Guide 2)

Sacred already gets Divine Spell, so normal Metamagic can focus on landing control, protecting support spells, and making radiant/necrotic damage turns count.

**Best picks:** Heightened Spell, Retain Spell, Careful Spell, Emotional Spell, Quickened Spell.

**Divine Spell** is free from the subclass, not from your normal Metamagic budget. Track it separately so you do not accidentally undercount your real options.

**Emotional Spell** is especially funny on Fiendish Sacred builds when the target's Charisma save is bad. Yes, the sacred bloodline can weaponize feelings. No, the enemy does not get a pamphlet.

### Umbral Sorcerer (Labyrinth Worldbook)

Umbral spends sorcery points on subclass features, not just spell modification. Fade Away costs the same 2 SP as Quickened Spell or Retain Spell, and Night's Veil costs 4 SP before you spend anything on the spell plan inside the darkness. That makes discipline more important than variety.

**Best picks:** Retain Spell, Heightened Spell, Careful Spell, Quickened Spell, Extended Spell.

**Retain Spell** is the practical pick because darkness, fear, black tentacles, invisibility, and other control/infiltration spells can lose the fight if concentration drops.

**Heightened Spell** supports the subclass's control side. Bane, fear, black tentacles, and other save-based spells get much nastier when the key target is less likely to pass the first save.

**Careful Spell** matters when your darkness/control plan catches allies in the same fight space. Umbral works best with party coordination, and Careful Spell is one way to keep your own side from paying the cost.

**Quickened Spell** is still strong, but Umbral should not autopick it blindly. Fade Away also uses your bonus action and costs 2 SP, so Quickened turns compete directly with your subclass mobility.

**Extended Spell** is not flashy, but it is relevant for exploration and infiltration spells such as pass without trace, invisibility, mislead, and seeming.

## Talent Links

Book of Blades does not add new Sorcerer Metamagic locally, but it changes how you evaluate talent support. Player's Guide 2 adds direct Sorcerer support through Valedictorian and elemental caster talents.

**[Valedictorian (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#players-guide-2-magic-talents)** is the PG2 headline. The Sorcerer option grants an additional Metamagic option you meet prerequisites for, and it can be replaced when you gain a Sorcerer level. This is excellent because Metamagic flexibility is a class resource, not a decorative ribbon.

**[Spell Disruptor (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#players-guide-2-magic-talents)** fits anti-mage Sorcerers who already like Subtle Spell, Retain Spell, Devour Spell, and counter-casting play.

**[Plane Touched (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#players-guide-2-magic-talents)** is spell access support for origin-heavy builds, especially Sacred and Abominable characters who want the magic to feel cosmologically inconvenient.

**[Fire Branded (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#players-guide-2-magic-talents)**, **[Lightning Walker (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#players-guide-2-magic-talents)**, and **[Thunder Resonator (Player's Guide 2)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#players-guide-2-magic-talents)** are the elemental picks to check for Draconic and Cyclonic builds.

**[School Specialization](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#school-specialization)** is the big one. The local Sorcerer guide calls out the +1 to one school's save DC/attack rolls and the sorcery point refund on 2-point Metamagic spends. That is directly relevant to Quickened Spell, Retain Spell, Hunting Spell, Lucky Spell, and Shielding Spell.

**[Combat Casting](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#combat-casting)** pairs with Retain Spell for concentration-heavy Sorcerers. Judicial Champion (Book of Blades) can point you toward it.

**[Focus (War)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#focus-war)** is the Conscript (Book of Blades) hook for blaster or battlefield Sorcerers.

**[Focus (Death)](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#focus-death)** is the Grave Keeper (Book of Blades) hook for death, necromancy, fear, or undead-facing Sorcerer concepts.

**[Spell Duelist](/articles/tales-of-the-valiant/talent-guides/tov-magic-talents-guide#spell-duelist)** is strongest in caster-heavy campaigns. It is not Metamagic, but it supports the same anti-mage identity as Subtle Spell, Retain Spell, and Devour Spell.

## Hot Takes

- The best Metamagic is the one attached to your actual spell list, not the one with the highest rating.
- Heightened Spell is expensive because it is supposed to be saved for encounter-defining casts.
- Quickened Spell is still excellent even with the leveled-spell restriction. A full spell plus a cantrip is a real turn.
- Twinned Spell is best when you respect the cost curve. Cantrips and low-circle spells are where it feels efficient.
- Retain Spell is underrated because players remember the advantage and forget the anti-incapacitation clause.
- Umbral (Labyrinth Worldbook) punishes sloppy sorcery point spending. Fade Away and Night's Veil are subclass bills, not free ribbon features.
- Quickened Spell is not automatic on Umbral (Labyrinth Worldbook). It is excellent when you are staying put, awkward when the same turn also wants Fade Away.
- Player's Guide 2 makes the Sorcerer better at setup. Bewildering Spell is not flashy until the next save fails and everyone pretends that was always the plan.
- Relentless Spell is the boring PG2 winner for attack-roll Sorcerers. Missing is bad. Paying 1 SP to ask the die to stop being dramatic is good.
- Emotional Spell is a monster-knowledge option. If you do not know whether Charisma is the weak save, you are gambling with 3 SP and vibes.
- Sacred gets Divine Spell without spending a normal Metamagic known pick. That is not flavor text; that is a budget line.
- Book of Blades does not make Metamagic bigger. It makes the talent shell around Metamagic better.

## Final Notes

Sorcerers are narrow casters with a stronger control panel. Metamagic is that control panel, and every pick should make your small known-spell list hit harder, land more reliably, affect better targets, or survive longer.

The safest first question is: "What spell am I trying to multiply?" If you cannot answer that, wait before picking the Metamagic.

For Umbral (Labyrinth Worldbook), add a second question: "How many sorcery points am I reserving for darkness movement or Night's Veil?" If the answer is zero, you are probably playing the subclass like a generic Sorcerer with a darker spell list.

For Player's Guide 2 subclasses, ask one more: "What am I spending SP on besides normal Metamagic?" Abominable spends on survival and condition tricks, Cyclonic spends on movement and storm features, and Sacred gets Divine Spell as an extra lever. Track those costs before you start treating every turn like a clearance sale.
