**Short answer:** Kalashtar from Eberron: Rising from the Last War get +2 Wisdom and +1 Charisma, advantage on all Wisdom saving throws (Dual Mind), resistance to psychic damage, telepathy out to 10 feet per level (Mind Link), and immunity to effects that require dreaming. They have no darkvision. Cleric and Druid are the best fits.

## Introduction

Kalashtar are a compound people from _Eberron: Rising from the Last War_: humans bound centuries ago to renegade spirits called quori, virtuous refugees from the nightmare plane of Dal Quor who fled a hostile power called the Dreaming Dark. That bond gives every Kalashtar a second presence in their mind that shapes their instincts and their sleep; the book even offers "you discuss things out loud with your quori spirit" as a personality trait. Some kalashtar grow up in communities devoted to the Path of Light, while others are orphans who know nothing of Dal Quor or the Dreaming Dark that hunts them.

Mechanically, Kalashtar build around one of the cleanest single-save defensive packages in the 2014 catalog. Dual Mind grants advantage on every Wisdom saving throw, no exceptions and no magic qualifier. Mental Discipline adds resistance to psychic damage on top of it, and Mind Link gives every Kalashtar a working telepathy tool from level 1, not a late-game feature. Severed from Dreams closes out the kit with a narrow but useful immunity to dream-based magic. There are no subraces: every Kalashtar gets the same +2 WIS, +1 CHA stat line and the same four signature traits.

## Racial Traits

Kalashtar have no subraces; all traits below apply to every Kalashtar character.

### <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span> Ability Score Increase: +2 WIS, +1 CHA

A stat line built for a Wisdom-primary caster, with a +1 Charisma bonus that lands squarely on a second class's primary stat. +2 WIS drives [Cleric](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-cleric-guide) and [Druid](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-druid-guide) spell save DC and spell attack bonus directly, while +1 CHA gives a WIS-primary build a meaningful boost to social checks without needing a second ability score investment. On a Charisma caster the +1 lands on the casting stat, but a lone +1 leaves you a point behind any race with +2 Charisma.

### Age

Kalashtar mature and age at the same rate as humans, reaching adulthood in their late teens and living into their eighties or beyond.

### Alignment

The virtuous spirit tied to every Kalashtar pulls them toward lawful and good behavior. Most combine self-discipline with compassion for others, though the book notes that some kalashtar resist their spirit's virtuous influence, which opens the door to a character who fights their own instincts.

### Size

Kalashtar are Medium.

### Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

### <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span> Dual Mind

_You have advantage on all Wisdom saving throws._

This is the trait that defines the race. One saving throw category, covered with advantage, unconditionally and permanently. Wisdom saves are the game's most common defense against fear, many charm effects, _hold person_ and _hold monster_, and a wide range of monster abilities that specify a WIS save without routing through a spell at all. Because Dual Mind carries no "against magic" qualifier, it covers every WIS save a DM calls for, spell-based or not, the same design choice that makes [Vedalken Dispassion](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/race-guides/dnd2014-vedalken-guide) a standout trait elsewhere in the catalog. Dual Mind is narrower in scope than Dispassion (one save category instead of three) but shares its unconditional reach.

### <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span> Mental Discipline

_You have resistance to psychic damage._

A clean, always-on damage reduction against a damage type that shows up disproportionately often on mind-affecting monsters: aberrations, illithid-adjacent creatures, and psionic foes across the bestiary frequently deal psychic damage as their primary attack. Mental Discipline does not touch any other damage type and has no interaction with saving throws (that is Dual Mind's job), but where it applies, it applies every single time with no resource cost.

### <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span> Mind Link

_You can speak telepathically to any creature you can see, provided the creature is within a number of feet of you equal to 10 times your level. You don't need to share a language with the creature for it to understand your telepathic utterances, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language. As an action, you can extend this ability to let one other creature you can see within range speak telepathically with you for 1 hour, or until you end the effect as an action._

A working utility tool from level 1 rather than a late-game unlock. The range scales automatically with character level (10 ft. at level 1, 100 ft. at level 10), and the lack of a shared-language requirement means Mind Link works on hostile creatures and on NPCs across a language barrier that would otherwise stall a negotiation. It does not work on most beasts: the target must understand at least one language. The action-cost option to extend telepathy to a second creature for an hour is a useful party-coordination tool: hand it to a scout who needs to relay information silently, or to a negotiator who needs a private backchannel with an ally mid-conversation.

### <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span> Severed from Dreams

Kalashtar sleep, but they don't connect to the plane of dreams as other creatures do. You are immune to spells and other magical effects that require you to dream, like _dream_, but not to spells and other magical effects that put you to sleep, like _sleep_.

A narrow immunity. The trait explicitly does not extend to sleep-inducing magic (the _sleep_ spell still works on a Kalashtar exactly as it does on anyone else), so this is not a broad defense against being incapacitated. What it does cover is the _dream_ spell: no messages delivered in your sleep, and no hostile nightmare that denies you a rest and deals 3d6 psychic damage. That makes it a direct counter to a villain who stalks a character across several sessions through their dreams.

### Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Quori, and one other language of your choice. The bonus language slot is a useful convenience over races locked to two fixed languages.

## Ability Scores

**Wisdom (+2):** Feeds [Cleric](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-cleric-guide) and [Druid](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-druid-guide) spell save DC and spell attack bonus directly, raises passive Perception and Insight for any build, and stacks with Dual Mind to make a Kalashtar's own WIS saving throw one of the hardest to beat in the game.

**Charisma (+1):** A useful secondary bump for social skill checks on any build, and a legitimate primary-stat contribution on a CHA-primary caster such as [Sorcerer](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-sorcerer-guide), [Bard](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-bard-guide), or [Warlock](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-warlock-guide).

## How Dual Mind Compares to Other Mental-Save Races

Kalashtar joins a small group of 2014 races built around protecting a caster's mind, and the comparison sharpens exactly where each trait's fine print differs.

[Vedalken](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/race-guides/dnd2014-vedalken-guide)'s Vedalken Dispassion is the broadest of the three: advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws, with no magic qualifier at all. That is a strictly wider net than Dual Mind, which covers only Wisdom. A Vedalken is protected against a Charisma save against _banishment_ or an Intelligence save against a mind flayer's Mind Blast, and a Kalashtar has no racial defense against either. What Kalashtar has that Vedalken does not is the rest of the kit around that one save: Mental Discipline's psychic resistance and Mind Link's built-in telepathy are both useful tools that Vedalken's Tireless Precision and Partially Amphibious do not replicate in kind, even though Tireless Precision is a strong trait in its own right.

[Gnome](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/race-guides/dnd2014-gnome-guide)'s Gnome Cunning sits in the middle: advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws, same three categories as Vedalken, but restricted to saves "against magic." In practice, that restriction rarely bites, since the overwhelming majority of INT/WIS/CHA saves in the 2014 rules are spell-triggered. Where it does matter is the same edge case that separates Gnome from Vedalken: a non-magical trap, a monster ability that calls for a WIS save without a spell attached, or a homebrew effect with no stated source. Dual Mind, like Vedalken Dispassion, carries no such qualifier, so a Kalashtar's WIS-save coverage is unconditional even in that edge case. [Deep Gnome](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/race-guides/dnd2014-deep-gnome-guide) shares the same magic-only Gnome Cunning trait, so the same comparison applies.

The practical shape of the comparison: Vedalken protects the widest range of saves; Gnome and Deep Gnome protect the same wide range but only against magic; Kalashtar protects the narrowest single category, Wisdom alone, but does so unconditionally and pairs it with psychic resistance and free telepathy that neither Vedalken nor Gnome offers. A party building around mental-save resilience gets the most raw coverage from a Vedalken, but a Kalashtar is the strongest single-save specialist in the group, and the only one of the three whose kit doubles as a scouting and communication tool.

There is also a resource-shape difference worth naming. Mental Discipline is a damage-type resistance, not a saving-throw bonus, so the two stack: a Kalashtar who fails the save against a psychic-damage effect still halves the damage through resistance. Neither Vedalken nor Gnome has a damage-mitigation trait under its saving-throw bonus, so a Kalashtar's kit keeps paying off on the saves that fail despite advantage.

---

## Rule Tip: Dual Mind vs. Concentration

Dual Mind covers the Wisdom saving throw, but concentration checks are Constitution saves, a category the trait does not touch at all. A Kalashtar Druid or Cleric holding a concentration spell while taking damage rolls that check with no racial bonus whatsoever, the same as a Human or Dwarf would. Do not assume Dual Mind protects concentration just because the race is a WIS-primary caster; pair it with [Resilient](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/feat-guides/dnd2014-defense-utility-feats-guide#resilient) (CON) or [War Caster](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/feat-guides/dnd2014-caster-feats-guide#war-caster) if concentration reliability matters to the build.

## Best Classes

### <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span> [Cleric](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-cleric-guide)

The definitive Kalashtar class. +2 WIS is the exact stat Cleric spellcasting runs on, and Dual Mind protects the WIS saving throw a Cleric already leans on when resisting fear and control effects mid-combat. Mind Link gives a Cleric a useful way to coordinate healing or warn allies without breaking concentration on an ongoing spell, and Mental Discipline's psychic resistance backs up a class that is often the party's frontline defense against aberrations and mind flayers.

### <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span> [Druid](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-druid-guide)

WIS drives Druid spellcasting directly. Wild Shape replaces your Strength, Dexterity and Constitution but keeps your Wisdom and lets you use racial traits your new form can physically use, so a Kalashtar bear still rolls WIS saves with Dual Mind. Mind Link solves the Wild Shape Druid's biggest problem: a beast cannot speak, but telepathy needs no mouth.

### <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span> [Monk](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-monk-guide)

WIS feeds a Monk's AC and several class features, and Dual Mind's saving-throw protection compounds with a Monk's own strong save profile at higher levels. Mental Discipline's psychic resistance rewards a class that spends a lot of time in melee range of exactly the kind of aberrant, psychic-damage-dealing monsters the trait is built to blunt.

### <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span> [Sorcerer](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-sorcerer-guide)

CHA-primary, and the +1 CHA bonus lands directly on Sorcerer spellcasting even though it is Kalashtar's secondary stat. Dual Mind still protects a Sorcerer's own WIS saves against the fear and charm effects that most threaten a squishy caster, and Mind Link gives a Sorcerer a way to coordinate a nova turn silently before committing resources.

### <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span> [Fighter](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-fighter-guide)

Dual Mind is still valuable defensively on any class, but a standard martial Fighter gets nothing from either ability score bonus. The missing Darkvision is a bigger cost here than on a caster, since a Fighter frequently leads the party into a dark room first. Playable, but a race that feeds STR, DEX, or CON directly will out-build a Kalashtar for this class.

## Worst Classes

### <span style={{ color: '#ef4444' }}>●</span> [Barbarian](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-barbarian-guide)

Barbarian wants Strength and Constitution, neither of which Kalashtar touches, and Rage already grants its own advantage on Strength saving throws, which has nothing to do with Dual Mind's Wisdom-save coverage. The trait set is entirely wasted on a class built to shrug off damage rather than resist mental effects.

### <span style={{ color: '#ef4444' }}>●</span> [Rogue](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-rogue-guide)

DEX-primary, and neither Kalashtar bonus feeds Sneak Attack, AC, or Stealth. Mind Link has clear utility for a scout, but it does not offset the missing DEX bonus that a race like [Goblin](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/race-guides/dnd2014-monstrous-races-guide#goblin) or Halfling would provide instead.

### <span style={{ color: '#ef4444' }}>●</span> [Paladin](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-paladin-guide)

STR and CHA drive most Paladin builds. The +1 CHA bonus lands on smite spell save DC, but the missing STR bonus and missing Darkvision both work against a class that wants to lead the charge into a dark room. Playable with a CHA-focused build, but consistently behind a race that feeds STR or CHA more directly.

## Best Feats

### <span style={{ color: '#3b82f6' }}>●</span> [Resilient](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/feat-guides/dnd2014-defense-utility-feats-guide#resilient) (CON)

Dual Mind already covers the Wisdom save. Resilient (CON) fills the single biggest remaining gap, since Constitution saves determine whether concentration spells survive incoming damage, and Kalashtar has no innate protection there.

### <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span> [War Caster](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/feat-guides/dnd2014-caster-feats-guide#war-caster)

Advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration pairs directly with the gap Resilient (CON) also targets, and the feat's ability to cast a spell as an opportunity attack rewards a build already leaning into WIS-based spellcasting.

### <span style={{ color: '#22c55e' }}>●</span> [Observant](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/feat-guides/dnd2014-defense-utility-feats-guide#observant)

A +1 WIS or INT option that rounds an odd Wisdom score up on a Cleric or Druid, plus +5 to passive Perception and passive Investigation. The passive bonus does not help you see in darkness, but it does help you notice the ambush you cannot see coming.

### <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span> [Lucky](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/feat-guides/dnd2014-defense-utility-feats-guide#lucky)

A generically strong feat on any build, and one that pairs well with Dual Mind: spend a Luck point on the Dexterity or Constitution save the race does not cover, and let advantage handle Wisdom saves on its own.

### <span style={{ color: '#f97316' }}>●</span> [Alert](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/feat-guides/dnd2014-defense-utility-feats-guide#alert)

Compensates for the missing Darkvision in a different way: acting before a dangerous enemy that a Kalashtar might not have spotted first in a dim or dark environment matters more here than on a race with innate low-light vision.

---

## Campaign Fit

Kalashtar are native to Eberron, and their lore, a bloodline bound to virtuous spirits fleeing a hostile power in the plane of dreams, is written specifically for that setting's post-war, magic-as-technology tone. Nothing in the mechanics depends on Eberron, however: Dual Mind, Mental Discipline, Mind Link, and Severed from Dreams all function identically in a homebrew world or a published adventure with no Eberron ties. The strongest mechanical fit is any campaign with a heavy dose of aberrations, mind flayers, or fear-and-charm-heavy enemy casters, where Dual Mind and Mental Discipline both see constant use. A campaign that runs mostly physical, non-mental threats will get less mileage out of the race's defining trait, though the stat line and Mind Link's utility still pull their weight regardless of campaign style. The missing Darkvision is worth weighing specifically against a dungeon-crawl-heavy campaign, where most other subterranean or monstrous-lineage races have some form of low-light vision by default.

---

## Multiclassing Considerations

**Cleric + Druid:** Both classes share WIS as their casting stat, so the +2 WIS bonus applies fully regardless of which class levels you take first, and Dual Mind protects the shared WIS save exposure both halves face.

**Cleric + Sorcerer:** WIS and CHA respectively line up with Kalashtar's two ability score bonuses, so neither half of the multiclass is left without a stat contribution, an unusual property for a two-stat racial bonus split across two different caster identities.

**Monk + Cleric:** Both lean on Wisdom, and Dual Mind's saving-throw protection stacks usefully with a Monk's own strong save profile once that class's later-level features come online.

## Example Build: Kalashtar Cleric (Levels 1-10)

**Race:** Kalashtar (+2 WIS, +1 CHA) | **Class:** Cleric (War Domain) | **Background:** Hermit

**Starting Stats (Point Buy, 27 points):** STR 14, DEX 10, CON 14, INT 8, WIS 15 (+2=17), CHA 10 (+1=11)

| Level | Key Choice | Notes |
| ----- | ---------- | -------------------------------------------- |
| 1 | Cleric 1 | War Priest, heavy armor and martial weapons |
| 2 | Cleric 2 | Channel Divinity: Turn Undead, Guided Strike |
| 3 | Cleric 3 | 2nd-level spells |
| 4 | Cleric 4 | ASI: +2 WIS (17 to 19) |
| 5 | Cleric 5 | Destroy Undead (CR 1/2) |
| 6 | Cleric 6 | Channel Divinity: War God's Blessing |
| 7 | Cleric 7 | 4th-level spells |
| 8 | Cleric 8 | Divine Strike; feat: Resilient (CON) |
| 9 | Cleric 9 | 5th-level spells |
| 10 | Cleric 10 | Divine Intervention |

**Key Tactics:**

- Dual Mind lets you commit to riskier positioning against enemy fear- and charm-casters, since WIS save-or-suck spells are rolled with advantage.
- Use Mind Link to relay tactical calls mid-fight without shouting across the battlefield, especially useful once positioned behind enemy lines during a flanking maneuver.
- Resilient (CON) at level 8 closes the concentration-save gap Dual Mind does not cover, making this build hard to control through any single save type by mid-campaign.

---

## Example Build: Kalashtar Druid (Levels 1-10)

**Race:** Kalashtar (+2 WIS, +1 CHA) | **Class:** Druid (Circle of the Moon) | **Background:** Outlander

**Starting Stats (Point Buy, 27 points):** STR 10, DEX 14, CON 14, INT 10, WIS 15 (+2=17), CHA 8 (+1=9)

| Level | Key Choice | Notes |
| ----- | ---------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| 1 | Druid 1 | Spellcasting, Druidic |
| 2 | Druid 2 | Wild Shape, Circle of the Moon (beasts up to CR 1) |
| 3 | Druid 3 | 2nd-level spells |
| 4 | Druid 4 | ASI: +2 WIS (17 to 19) |
| 5 | Druid 5 | 3rd-level spells |
| 6 | Druid 6 | Primal Strike; beasts up to CR 2 |
| 7 | Druid 7 | 4th-level spells |
| 8 | Druid 8 | Feat: War Caster, protects concentration |
| 9 | Druid 9 | 5th-level spells |
| 10 | Druid 10 | Elemental Wild Shape |

**Key Tactics:**

- Give one ally the reply half of Mind Link before you shift. The link lasts an hour, so granting it before a fight saves an action you would rather spend on attacks.
- Wild Shape keeps your Wisdom score and Dual Mind, so a bear still rolls against _hold monster_ and fear with your own Wisdom and advantage.
- Mental Discipline's psychic resistance blunts the exact damage type an Intellect Devourer or mind flayer minion is likely to deal if the campaign leans into aberrant threats.

## FAQ

**Does Dual Mind protect against fear and charm effects?**

Only the ones that call for a Wisdom saving throw. Many fear and charm spells do use a WIS save, so Dual Mind covers a large share of the game's common control effects, but check the specific spell or ability before assuming coverage, since some key off a different save entirely.

**Is Mental Discipline the same as resistance to all mental damage?**

No. Mental Discipline grants resistance specifically to psychic damage, a single damage type. It has no interaction with saving throws at all: that is Dual Mind's job. The two traits are separate and stack toward different outcomes.

**Can Kalashtar see in the dark?**

No. Unlike most Eberron-native and many monstrous-lineage 2014 races, Kalashtar have no Darkvision trait in this book. Plan around it with a light source or a party member who has Darkvision.

**How does Mind Link range scale?**

The range is 10 feet times your character level. A level 1 Kalashtar has a 10-foot telepathic range; by level 10 that is 100 feet. The creature must be visible to you and does not need to share a language with you to understand your telepathic speech.

**Is Kalashtar good for Cleric?**

Very good. +2 Wisdom feeds spell save DC directly, and Dual Mind protects the exact saving throw category a Cleric leans on most heavily. The missing Darkvision is the one meaningful downside, easily offset by a torch, a Light cantrip, or a party member who covers it.

## Final Notes

> **Hot Take:** Most evaluations rate Kalashtar as a middling race because it protects only one saving throw category instead of three like Vedalken or Gnome. That framing misses the point of the kit. Dual Mind is unconditional in exactly the way Vedalken Dispassion is unconditional, no magic qualifier, always on, and it comes bundled with a damage-resistance trait and a free telepathy tool that neither Vedalken nor Gnome offers. Judge Kalashtar as a single-save specialist with utility attached, not as an incomplete version of a three-save race.

Kalashtar rewards a build that wants steady mental resilience without giving up a party-utility tool in exchange. The stat line and trait set line up cleanly with [Cleric](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-cleric-guide) and [Druid](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-druid-guide), stay solid for Monk and [Sorcerer](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/class-guides/dnd2014-sorcerer-guide), and fall off hard for anything built around Strength or Dexterity.

If you want a character who is hard to frighten or dominate through a Wisdom save, resistant to the psychic damage aberrations love to deal, and equipped with silent telepathy from level 1, Kalashtar is one of the more mechanically distinct races available from _Eberron: Rising from the Last War_. For the full race index, see the [D&D 5e (2014) race guides hub](/articles/dnd-5e-2014/race-guides).
