## The Short Answer

**Buy Night City 2045 when your campaign needs a specific, reactive place to run jobs - not because you think you must memorize the entire city.** It is a 2026 city sourcebook with Night City history and facts, Flashmaps, factions, district and location entries, the Outskirts, and Playland by the Sea. It adds GM tools for deciding who responds to trouble and whether local utilities are working.

The Core Rulebook is still enough for a complete campaign. This book earns its place when a crew keeps returning to Night City and you want neighborhoods, routes, services, security, and local politics to create better choices than a generic "downtown" label can.

## Hot Take

Night City 2045 is strongest when the GM refuses to use all of it. A detailed city sourcebook should make a crew's familiar blocks matter more, not turn every session into a guided tour.

Choose one district, one local authority, one useful service, and one consequence for making noise. Return to them until the crew has history there. The book's depth becomes campaign fuel only after players can tell which parts of the city they are risking.

## What Night City 2045 Covers

The book frames itself as an in-world guide compiled by independent Medias. It begins with general city material - history, geography, travel, laws, services, utilities, media, and Flashmaps - then moves to gangs, criminal organizations, and security firms. Its city coverage is organized into The Island, Northside, Mainland, Southside, the Outskirts, and Playland by the Sea.

| Book element | What it gives a GM | Use it when... |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Night City facts and Flashmaps | Context for travel, services, markets, medical access, and city movement. | The crew needs a believable route, resource, or complication. |
| Faction material | Day-to-day gangs, criminal groups, and security firms that can protect, exploit, or notice a job. | You need a local interest with something to gain or lose. |
| District and location entries | Who is in charge, who lives there, security, recent history, notable places, and local personalities. | A job needs a neighborhood with consequences. |
| Security Codes | A likely responder and intensity for an incident. | You want trouble to be visible and legible before it arrives. |
| Utility Codes | A prompt for unreliable power, water, or CitiNet access. | An infrastructure failure would create a useful decision. |

The [Cyberpunk RED Night City Guide](/articles/cyberpunk-red/night-city-guides) turns that material into a repeatable job-prep method. Read this sourcebook guide first when the question is whether the book belongs on the table at all.

## Use Security And Utility Codes As Signals

Security Codes are guidelines, not an automatic punishment. A code identifies the likelihood that security responds, the likely faction, and the intensity of that potential response. The sourcebook explicitly leaves the trigger and arrival time to the GM.

That makes the best use straightforward:

1. Show the crew the guards, cameras, checkpoints, or local reputation before they act.
2. Tell them what group is likely to care if something goes loud.
3. Let their plan affect whether the response is triggered.
4. Make the response pursue a goal: protect property, identify witnesses, clear a site, or recover someone.

Utility Codes cover whether power, water, or CitiNet access is currently unavailable. The book recommends them for flavor or when an extra complication improves a mission. Use that restraint. An outage should create a route, a tradeoff, or a ticking clock - not erase the only way forward.

## A Fixed Sourcebook With A Flexible City

Night City 2045 sits during *Tales of the RED: Hope Reborn*, specifically between the "Hope's Calling!!!" and "Ripping the Ripper" missions. Its opening warns that this can create spoilers when published material is used, and asks GMs to adjust details for their own campaigns.

More importantly, it says the guide is in-world reporting and that a table's facts override its facts. The maps deliberately leave open space because Night City is meant to grow as the story requires. Treat that as permission to move a business, change a faction relationship, or invent a block the crew now needs to care about.

| If your table needs... | Buy or use this book for... | Do not expect... |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A recurring local campaign | District-level texture, reliable places, local pressure, and changing relationships. | A mandatory plot or a single correct version of every neighborhood. |
| Better city complications | Security and utility prompts that can reshape a job. | A reason to roll for disruption in every scene. |
| Faction-driven jobs | Concrete gangs, criminal organizations, and security firms. | A replacement for the NPC depth in [Danger Gal Dossier](/articles/cyberpunk-red/source-books-guide/cpr-danger-gal-dossier-guide). |
| A new group learning RED | A future reference after the crew wants more city detail. | A substitute for the Core Rulebook or a required first purchase. |

## Sources And Scope

This guide summarizes *Night City 2045* (CR3141, first printing 2026). It intentionally does not reproduce maps, district or location lists, Security or Utility Code tables, faction rosters, NPC stat blocks, or mission text. Use the book for exact city facts, procedures, and campaign context.
