## The Short Answer

**For an ongoing Cyberpunk RED campaign, use the Core Rulebook. Use the Jumpstart Kit for a ready-to-play introduction, then convert its missions before continuing with the full game.** The Jumpstart Kit is an introductory box from 2019 with essential streamlined rules, world lore, pregenerated characters, an adventure, Screamsheets, dice, and other play aids. The Core Rulebook, released in 2020, is the complete game.

That distinction is not a small product preference. The publisher says that some Jumpstart Kit rules changed between its release and the Core Rulebook, and it publishes a free conversion guide for taking the Kit's missions into core play. Treat the Kit as a strong on-ramp, not a second rules authority.

## Hot Take

The Jumpstart Kit does not become more valuable by pretending it is a smaller Core Rulebook. Its real strength is getting a group to the table quickly; its real weakness starts only when a campaign needs it to answer questions it was never built to settle.

Run the starter experience as a starter experience. If the table wants to keep the crew, jobs, and momentum, make the Core Rulebook the authority before the next major decision. That preserves the Kit's fast first-session energy without turning changed rules into avoidable arguments.

## What Each Product Is Actually For

| Product | Verified purpose | Best use | Do not rely on it for... |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| *Cyberpunk RED Jumpstart Kit* (CR3000) | A starter-box introduction with streamlined essential rules, lore, pregenerated edgerunners, an adventure, Screamsheets, dice, and other ready-to-play support. | A quick, low-friction first session or a group that wants prepared material. | The final authority for a full campaign's rules. |
| *Cyberpunk RED Core Rulebook* (CR3001) | The complete game: character creation, rules, world lore, and stat blocks in the 2045 setting. | An ongoing campaign, custom characters, exact procedures, and future expansion choices. | A shortcut around choosing the right first-session scope. |
| Jumpstart Kit Conversion Guide | A free publisher guide for running Kit missions with full core rules, including rebalancing them for the beginning of a core campaign. | Continuing Kit material after moving to the Core Rulebook. | A reason to blend old and new rules from memory. |

The [Cyberpunk RED Core Rulebook guide](/articles/cyberpunk-red/source-books-guide/cpr-core-rulebook-guide) explains what the full game covers. The key comparison point is simpler: the products serve different moments in a group's life, and the later Core Rulebook supersedes the starter box for rules decisions.

## The Rules Difference Is The Decision

The publisher explicitly says the Jumpstart Kit uses the same general game family with streamlined introductory rules, and that some rules changed by the time the Core Rulebook released. That means a group should not solve a current rules question by combining a remembered starter-box procedure with a core rule.

Use this transition rule instead:

1. Finish or pause the Jumpstart material at a natural break.
2. Choose the Core Rulebook as the campaign's rules authority.
3. Use the free conversion guide for a Kit mission you want to continue.
4. Make future characters, gear, and rulings from the Core Rulebook and deliberately approved supplements.

This is also why the conversion guide matters. It is not merely an errata sheet. The publisher describes it as both a way to run all Kit missions with the full rules and a rebalancing of those missions for the beginning of a Core Rulebook campaign.

## Which Starting Route Fits Your Group?

| Your group needs... | Start with... | Then do this |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A one-session or low-commitment tryout | The Jumpstart Kit, if you have it, or the free [Cyberpunk RED Beginner's Guide](/articles/cyberpunk-red/beginners-guide) route with Easy Mode. | Decide whether the group wants a continuing campaign before expanding its options. |
| A flexible ongoing campaign | The Core Rulebook. | Build a crew, set the campaign's allowed sources, and use the book for exact procedures. |
| To continue a Kit adventure with a newly committed group | The Core Rulebook plus the Jumpstart Kit Conversion Guide. | Convert the mission instead of assuming the starter-box version remains current. |
| A physical starter package with play aids | The Jumpstart Kit, if that ready-to-play format is the priority. | Plan the transition to the Core Rulebook before the table outgrows prepared material. |

The clear new-buyer verdict is the Core Rulebook. It is the only one of the two that the publisher identifies as the complete game. The Jumpstart Kit remains a worthwhile entry point when its prepared experience is what gets your group playing now, but it is not a cheaper substitute for the campaign foundation.

## Do Not Confuse The Jumpstart Kit With Easy Mode

Both products can introduce Cyberpunk RED, but they are not interchangeable. Easy Mode is a free quickstart path. The Jumpstart Kit is a 2019 starter box with its own prepared package and rules history. The [Cyberpunk RED Beginner's Guide](/articles/cyberpunk-red/beginners-guide) uses Easy Mode for the lowest-commitment trial and keeps the same campaign verdict: move to the Core Rulebook when the table wants the full game.

Choose the route that removes the obstacle in front of your actual group. If the obstacle is "we want something ready tonight," starter material helps. If it is "we want to build and run our own campaign," start with the Core Rulebook rather than taking a detour through a product whose rules later changed.
